Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Nurse Administrator to direct, administer, and coordinate all activities of Foster Wing. The role ensures quality nursing care, develops policies, and leads program development to expand services.

The position requires a Bachelor's in Nursing, MA RN license, and 8+ years of clinical nursing with 2+ years in management. Master’s degree preferred; a signing bonus may be available based on interview and internal equity.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited school.
  • Current unrestricted RN license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • 8+ years of clinical nursing experience.
  • 2+ years of management/leadership experience.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and evaluate programs; budget understanding.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • MSN preferred; Med Surg telemetry experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements programs to measure, monitor, assess, and improve quality of nursing care delivered to patients.

This position is responsible for directing, administering, and coordinating all activities of Foster Wing. Ensures the delivery of quality services and that professional nursing is practiced in accordance with the established standards of nursing and the standards of practice at HealthAlliance Hospital. Responsible for the recommendation, development, and implementation of approved policies and procedures. Develops short- and long-term planning and goal setting for Foster Wing. Develops new programs and expands existing services. Establishes systems that ensure continuity and quality of care.

I. Major Responsibilities
  • 1. Contributes to the development and execution of strategies and goals for the organization.
  • 2. Develops and implements effective, ongoing programs to measure, monitor, assess, and to improve quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
  • 3. Ensures the effective coordination of the patient's care with other services and departments throughout the hospital.
  • 4. Monitors the operations of the nursing staff and ensures compliance with regulations on organizational and governmental standards and practices.
  • 5. Develops and utilizes performance metrics to continually improve quality and operating efficiency.
  • 6. Develops a culture of safety through the use of performance metrics.
  • 7. Maintains a current knowledge of trends and techniques in the field of management and area of specialization.
  • 8. Supports the hospital's commitment to community affairs and encourages employee involvement in community organization. Identifies community needs and trends and develops quality programs to meet those needs.
Standard Management Level Responsibilities
  • 1. Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
  • 2. Develops and recommends the budgets for the areas managed. Manages activities to ensure financial goals are met.
  • 3. Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
  • 4. Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation; and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
  • 5. Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.
  • 6. Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.
  • 7. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.
  • 8. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH (Department of Public Health), etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
  • 9. Ensures that department complies with established hospital policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
  • 10. Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
  • 11. Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • 12. Ensures compliance with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • 13. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • 14. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications

License/Certification/Education

Required:

  • 1. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  • 2. Current unrestricted Registered Nurse license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Preferred:

  • 1. Master's Degree in Nursing.
  • 2. Med Surg telemetry experience.

Experience/Skills

Required:

  • 1. Minimum eight (8) years of clinical nursing experience.
  • 2. Minimum two (2) years of management/leadership experience.
  • 3. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and evaluate programs, and to analyze fiscal data and develop departmental budgets.
  • 4. Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of PC spreadsheets.
  • 5. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
