Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Finance & Administration, the Director, Fiscal Planning & Accounting is a senior leadership role requiring strategic financial expertise, executive management experience, and business planning skills. Responsibilities include overseeing all fiscal planning and accounting activities, ensuring fiscal integrity, advising senior leadership and the Board of Trustees, and managing the accounting teams of related multi-employer benefit funds. The role involves leading a team of approximately 25 staff, implementing financial policies, and managing complex funding sources with agility.

This position is crucial for shaping the Funds’ future, providing strategic direction, and supporting long-term sustainability through operational oversight, staff development, and system monitoring.

Core Pillars & Responsibilities

  1. Leadership & People Management
  • Act as a strategic partner to senior leadership.
  • Develop and communicate a clear, innovative vision for the department aligned with organizational goals.
  • Lead and support the Accounting Management Team in people, processes, and projects.
  • Design an organizational structure promoting efficiency and proper controls.
  • Set objectives and performance metrics; motivate and develop staff.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations on complex issues.
  • Propose sustainable change management strategies.
  • Implement cross-training to enhance resiliency and internal career growth.
  1. Business Strategy & Fiscal Planning
  • Advise on financial operations, strategies, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Optimize accounting workflows for timely, accurate reporting and compliance.
  • Manage audits and ensure adherence to standards.
  • Oversee financial reporting for stakeholders and regulators.
  • Evaluate BI tools to enhance insights and performance.
  • Support Dynamics 365 F&O system efforts and legal/reporting compliance.
  • Mentor staff on compliance and regulatory adherence.
  • Support additional initiatives as needed.
  1. Stakeholder Management
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal departments, trustees, and external financial institutions.
  • Address escalated issues with advanced problem-solving.
  • Collaborate on strategic initiatives to improve organizational outcomes.
  • Empower teams to use data insights effectively.
  • Foster open communication and transparency across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, or related field.
  • 10+ years of executive management experience in a complex organization.
  • 7+ years of developing finance leaders and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Proficiency with Business Intelligence tools and financial modeling.
  • Experience working with Boards, trustees, and financial institutions.
  • Expertise in GAAP and internal control systems.
  • Analytical, organized, and detail-oriented with excellent communication skills.
  • Initiative, strategic thinking, and collaborative mindset.
  • Certifications such as CPA, CFA, CMA, or CGMA preferred.
  • Experience with Multi-Employer (Taft-Hartley) Benefit Funds is a plus but not required.
  • Strong commitment to the mission of 32BJ Benefit Funds.
