Job summary

Viam is seeking a Director of Forward Deployed Engineering in New York City, Hybrid 3 days/week in the office, with occasional travel to customer sites. Lead a team of five engineers responsible for getting customers into production, owning the technical approach, and serving as the senior technical partner to customers' engineering and operations leaders.

This leadership role remains hands-on: you’ll contribute to architecture decisions, design reviews, coaching, and customer conversations.

Qualifications

• Experience leading engineers who deploy software in customer environments.
• Ability to review designs and understand code with no daily coding duties.
• Judgment across systems integration, SDKs, and edge/cloud architectures.
• Proven track record with enterprise customers and ability to hold hard conversations with leadership.
• Comfort making decisions with incomplete information and owning outcomes.
• Experience building structure in bespoke environments.
• Ability to balance one customer urgency with portfolio-scale needs.

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of five forward deployed engineers: coaching, performance, hiring, and resource allocation across accounts.
• Own the technical approach across deployments and make architecture and prioritization calls.
• Be the senior technical voice with customer leadership from kickoff through escalation.
• Collaborate with Viam leadership on account direction and keep them updated on progress, risks, and blockers.
• Drive deployments to production: hold the schedule, unblock blockers, adjust approach as sites demand.
• Turn field learnings into platform priorities with Product and Engineering.
