Job summary

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington, DC seeks a Program Director to lead the development, implementation, ongoing management and evaluation of federally funded research fellowships, including NRC Research Associateship and related programs.

The role reports to senior leadership, manages a mid-size team, and drives strategic planning, sponsor relations, and program performance. Hybrid work environment with onsite expectations and travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of scientific, technical, or policy issues.
• Strong program/project management skills.
• Ability to negotiate funding and manage staff.

Responsibilities

• Develops and maintains a balanced, high-quality portfolio of research fellowships.
• Oversees program management, selection committees, and process improvements.
• Provides leadership and mentorship to staff and manages performance and compensation reviews.
• Interprets policies and resolves complex programmatic issues.
• Oversees financial management, budgeting, and sponsor stewardship.
• Develops relationships with prospective sponsors and external contacts.
• Leads outreach, marketing strategy, and annual budget planning.
