Job summary

Wellabe, Inc. is seeking a Director of Data Management in Des Moines to lead the design, delivery, and modernization of our enterprise data platform.

You will guide a mixed onsite and remote data engineering team and align data strategy with business goals, enabling analytics, AI/ML, and trusted data assets across the organization. You will oversee migration from legacy Azure SQL Server to Azure Databricks Lakehouse, ensuring scalability, reliability, and compliance with PHI/PII requirements.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in data engineering, architecture, or platform leadership with 5+ years in team management.
• Proven success leading large-scale data modernization programs in Azure or similar clouds.
• Hands-on experience with Databricks Lakehouse (PySpark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog).
• Experience with PHI/PII data handling and regulatory compliance.
• Strong communication and ability to influence both technical and business stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Define and own the enterprise data platform strategy for scalability, performance, and cloud optimization.
• Oversee data modernization, including migration from legacy Azure SQL Server to Azure Databricks Lakehouse.
• Lead and mentor data engineers; ensure delivery accountability and technical excellence.
• Collaborate with architects to ensure data models, pipelines, and platform design meet business needs.
• Manage the data portfolio, budget, resourcing, and vendor relationships to scale capabilities.
• Stay current on Databricks, streaming, and AI/ML enablement to evolve the platform roadmap.
