Responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

The Director, Commercial Transmission Operations is a senior technical-commercial leadership role within Real Time Operations, accountable for converting complex transmission rights, market constructs, and operational constraints into reliable, financially optimized outcomes for Pattern's operating and development portfolio. The role provides the organization with deep subject-matter ownership across CAISO's Subscriber Participating Transmission Owner framework, Transmission Service Rights, Existing Transmission Contracts, Congestion Revenue Rights, Transmission Ownership Rights, EDAM and Markets+ seams, and related Western Interconnection transmission constructs. This position leads the transition of relevant assets into day-ahead market participation; supports development teams in structuring transmission, interconnection, and commercialization pathways for future projects; and serves as the Senior Director's designated backup in executive, cross-functional, and operational escalation settings. Success requires uncommon fluency across market design, tariff interpretation, real-time operations, financial exposure management, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership.

Key Accountabilities
  • Own commercial transmission strategy across SunZia and Western Spirit: TSA/TSR administration, quarterly ETC-to-CRR conversion elections, and MTSA transmission-sharing administration.
  • Serve as the Director's designated backup: represent Real Time Operations in cross-functional and executive forums, and own portfolio outcomes and escalations in the Director's absence.
  • Lead the technical depth of complex transmission operations, including outage strategy, transmission redirects, and complex pathing support across caiso's spto/edam and spp/m+ constructs.
  • Coordinate with CAISO, TSPs (SRP, TEP, WAPA), and Gridforce on regulatory engagement, NERC/CAISO compliance, and evolving EDAM/Markets+ seams design.
  • Support commercial and financial reporting: transmission resales, MTSA administration, analysis, and identification of incremental revenue/monetization opportunities.
  • Supports business development thesis in analysis, and identification of incremental revenue/monetization opportunities.
Qualifications
Experience/Qualifications/Education Required

Education

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Economics, Energy Systems, Business, or a related technical/commercial discipline preferred; equivalent, directly relevant industry experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Ten or more years of progressive energy-industry experience is expected,
  • Demonstrated depth in commercial transmission operations, CAISO market design, and the practical administration of TSRs, ETCs, CRRs, TORs, OASIS transactions, e-Tags, and transmission entitlement frameworks.
  • The ideal candidate brings direct experience developing, negotiating, commercializing, or implementing transmission rights and market-design structures in CAISO, WECC, SPP, EDAM, and/or Markets+ contexts.
  • Strong preference is given to candidates who have led or materially contributed to EDAM or Markets+ transmission design, seams analysis, congestion and revenue-rights strategy, transmission-service commercialization, interconnection-related commercial strategy, and operating practices for high-value renewable and transmission assets.
Additional Requirements

The position requires mature leadership judgment, executive presence, and the ability to direct analysts, specialists, shift managers, schedulers, and cross-functional technical resources. The role must be able to represent Real Time Operations with senior leaders, development, commercial, legal, regulatory, compliance, external transmission providers, market operators, and vendors. Proficiency with OASIS platforms, e-Tagging systems, CAISO and SPP market tools, power-flow or transmission modeling tools such as PowerWorld or equivalent, Microsoft Office, and analytical reporting tools is expected.
