Job summary

The Aerospace Corporation in Chantilly, VA seeks a Department Director for Artificial Intelligence/ML to lead AI Systems and Delivery. You will supervise AI operations staff, set standards, and govern release decisions across a multi-investment enterprise.

The role reports to the Corporate Technical Fellow for AI and aligns with corporate AI strategy. Requires 10+ years in AI/ML, 4+ years in management, DoD-level security clearance eligibility, and strong stakeholder communication.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent work experience.
• 10+ years in AI/ML or enterprise technical delivery, incl. regulated environments.
• 4+ years in people management with direct supervision.
• Experience managing multi-million dollar technical portfolios and defense of plans.
• Deep knowledge of AI/ML platforms, MLOps, data pipelines, and containerized deployment.
• Cloud data/AI platforms (Azure/AWS/GCP) with practical Azure AI familiarity.
• Experience delivering capabilities on accredited networks at multiple classification levels.
• Strong written and verbal communication; able to translate strategic intent into actionable direction.
• Willing to travel ~25% for customer meetings and technical collaboration.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

• Serve as deputy to the Corporate Technical Fellow for AI, with delegated authority.
• Own operating cadence for the AI portfolio, including intake, prioritization, milestones, and governance.
• Set technical baseline for AI systems delivery and ensure it is documented and enforced.
• Own evaluation and release gate for AI capabilities across mission and enterprise use.
• Initiate new AI initiatives from concept to funded plan and transition to steady-state owner.
• Direct extension of AI capability across multiple classification levels and networks.
• Operationalize Generative AI Council standards into repeatable release criteria and report outcomes.
