Job summary

Optum is seeking a Director of AI/ML Engineering for Claims Automation & Orchestration. This remote role leads the design and delivery of an AI-enabled orchestration layer across claims systems, automation tools, and human-in-the-loop processes.

The candidate will build and lead a team of engineers and solution architects, influence senior stakeholders, and translate AI capabilities into production-ready solutions within a complex health-tech environment.

Qualifications

8+ years in AI/ML engineering or related leadership roles.
5+ years delivering automation across multiple systems and platforms.
Experience designing standards, governance, observability and validation for production systems.

Responsibilities

Lead architecture and delivery of a cross-platform claims orchestration layer.
Design routing models using AI, rules, and automation based on task type and risk.
Establish durable execution patterns for multi-step processes.
Create reusable interfaces and handoff patterns for platform teams.
Build validation, scoring, and human review for high-risk scenarios.
Instrument observability and reporting for throughput and impact.
Partner with stakeholders to align strategy with enterprise standards.
Recruit and lead a team of AI/ML engineers and architects while staying hands-on.
