Job summary

Jobtailor in the United States (Illinois) seeks a senior actuarial leader to guide modeling and strategy for the team in health insurance. You will lead actuaries and analysts, set priorities, and ensure adherence to Actuarial Standards of Practice.

You will drive cross-functional communication, develop business cases, oversee budgeting, and foster continuous improvement through data-driven analyses.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Economics.
  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and MAAA; ASA alternative may be substituted with experience.
  • At least 7 years of actuarial experience in health insurance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication to prepare documentation and presentations.
  • Proficiency with Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures appropriate modeling and drives technical development for the team.
  • Develops strategy for tools, technology, and resources used by the team.
  • Monitors compliance with standards and applicable practice requirements.
  • Communicates across the company and with external parties; supports senior decision making.
  • Directs work of actuaries and possibly non-actuaries; manages long-term projects and budgets.
  • Oversees a team of managers and advises on difficult staff conversations.
  • Promotes a continuous improvement culture within the department.
  • Translates needs into compelling business cases and ROI analyses.

Job description


  • Ensures that the appropriate modeling is being done and that the team continues to develop technically. Develops and drives the strategy for the most appropriate tools, technology and resources for the team to use.

  • Complies with, monitors their staff for compliance with, and ensures that their areas have appropriate monitoring in place for all applicable compliance requirements and Actuarial Standards of Practice.

  • Communicates effectively across the company and with external parties. Ensures that the appropriate information is making its way to all levels of the organization. Has ability to recommend a course of action based on 360 view of the business and develop compelling written and oral presentations that clearly drive the delivery of information for high-level decision making.

  • Determines strategies to develop and improve key relationships in the areas and with external areas. Determines all areas where key relationships should exist.

  • Understands actuarial concepts, multiple actuarial areas and at least one business segment all at expert level.

  • Directs the work of a team of actuaries and possibly non-actuaries. Manages long term projects and work streams. Sets the strategy for success in the area.

  • Manages and develops a team of Managers and potentially some analysts. Supports, guides and prepares managers for difficult conversations with staff.

  • Drives and demonstrates a continuous improvement culture in the department.


Requirements


  • Bachelor degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Economics. Other Bachelor (or higher) Degrees may be considered.

  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and Membership in the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). In place of attainment of FSA, 4 years of actuarial experience in the health insurance field at the ASA level may be substituted.

  • At least 7 years of actuarial experience in the health insurance or related field.

  • Verbal and written communications skills to prepare effective documentation, facilitate training and development, and participate in presentations.

  • PC proficiency to include Word and Excel.

  • Overseeing the annual budget and allocating resources for various projects and operational needs.

  • Translating needs and initiatives into compelling business cases.

  • Conducting cost-benefit analyses to justify investments and ensure ROI.
