The Hartford, a leading insurance provider, seeks a Director & Actuary for Workers’ Compensation pricing to lead pricing methods, update models, and drive profitability across Small Business and Mid/Large Commercial segments. The role partners with product, underwriting, data science, IT and multiple actuarial teams.

The candidate should bring strong statistical and communication skills, 5+ years actuarial experience, and Excel expertise, with FCAS preferred.

  • 5+ years of actuarial experience with a proven record of success.
  • Workers’ Compensation experience a plus, but not required.
  • Strong technical/analytical skills; high proficiency in Excel; R/SQL preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communications; teamwork across levels.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development, enhancement and maintenance of actuarial pricing methodologies and tools used by Underwriting, Product and Sales.
  • Develop tools focusing on risk segmentation and account-specific indicated premium picks.
  • Update pricing model parameters and add enhancements for accuracy and efficiency.
  • Incorporate loss development, trend, excess loss factors, and credibility refreshes.
  • Foster connections with teammates and key business partners.
  • Collaborate with product partners to provide profitability views and analyses of issues.
  • Support production implementation of pricing initiatives.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and perspectives.

Join our Workers’ Compensation line of business pricing actuarial team, supporting a $3B book across both Small Business and Middle & Large Commercial segments. As a market leader within the WC industry, this role has significant visibility from leadership. This role owns various pricing tools and develops business guidance to drive profitable growth. The position will work in close partnership with a variety of business partners including product, underwriting, data science, IT, and multiple actuarial teams. We seek a candidate with strong statistical, analytical and communication skills, who is eager to challenge and continuously improve established processes and creatively solve new problems.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development, enhancement and maintenance of actuarial pricing methodologies and tools used by the Underwriting, Product and Sales teams.
  • This includes tools focusing on risk segmentation as well as development of account-specific indicated premium picks.
  • Update pricing model parameters while adding enhancements for improved accuracy and process efficiency.
  • This includes items such as loss development, trend, excess loss factors, and credibility refreshes.
  • Foster strong connections between teammates and key business partners.
  • Collaborate with our product business partners to provide accurate views of profitability and perform analyses that identify and address business issues.
  • Support the production implementation of various pricing initiatives.
  • Stay apprised of broader industry trends and perspectives.
Qualifications
  • FCAS preferred, but not required.
  • 5+ years of actuarial experience with a proven record of success.
  • Prior Workers’ Compensation experience a plus, but not required.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Knowledge of Actuarial pricing and reserving techniques.
  • Strong technical/analytical skills; High proficiency in Excel required and experience with R/SQL preferred.
  • General knowledge of Property and Casualty insurance operations.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Independently motivated; constantly looks for areas to add value.Teamwork skills including ability to effectively collaborate with and influence individuals at different organizational levels.
Location

This role can have a Hybrid work arrangement in hub offices located in Hartford CT, Chicago, IL, and Charlotte, NC. Candidates who live near one of our office locations will have the expectation of working in an office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office may be considered for a remote work arrangement with occasional travel.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is: $136,000 - $204,000
