Job summary

Amgen Ventures is seeking a senior investment professional to evaluate biotech opportunities, lead due diligence, and present investment cases to governance committees. The role collaborates with Research, Strategy, Finance, and Legal teams to drive portfolio value.

You will engage with entrepreneurs, investors, and academic founders, shaping venture strategy and market intelligence across life sciences and AI-enabled drug development.

Qualifications

Doctorate degree with venture capital/biotech exposure.
Advanced biotech and drug discovery knowledge with investment experience.

Responsibilities

Identify and evaluate private biotech and healthcare tech companies and aligned funds.
Maintain relationships with entrepreneurs, VC firms, academia, incubators, and innovation ecosystems.
Monitor trends across biotechnology, AI-enabled drug discovery, and healthcare technology.
Perform scientific, strategic, competitive, clinical, commercial, and financial due diligence.
Support execution of direct equity investments, syndicate financings, and fund investments.
Prepare investment recommendations and present analyses to leadership and governance committees.
Support management of portfolio companies and fund relationships.
Serve as a liaison between portfolio companies and Amgen stakeholders.
Assist with board observer duties, portfolio monitoring, and investment updates.
Identify opportunities for scientific collaboration and strategic partnerships.
Collaborate with Research, Business Development, Strategy, Corporate Finance, Legal, and cross-functional teams.
Contribute to portfolio reviews and market intelligence strategy.

Job description

Identify and evaluate private biotechnology companies, healthcare technology companies, and venture capital funds aligned with Amgen’s strategic and scientific priorities
Maintain relationships with entrepreneurs, venture capital firms, academic institutions, incubators, company creation platforms, and innovation ecosystems
Monitor emerging scientific, clinical, competitive, and investment trends across biotechnology, life sciences, AI-enabled drug discovery, and healthcare technology
Perform scientific, strategic, commercial, competitive, and financial due diligence on prospective investments
Support execution of direct equity investments, syndicate financings, company creation opportunities, and limited partner fund investments
Participate in transaction structuring, valuation analysis, term sheet review, and investment documentation with Legal and Finance partners
Prepare investment recommendations and present analyses to Amgen Ventures/Business Development leadership and governance committees
Support management of existing portfolio companies and fund relationships
Serve as a strategic liaison between portfolio companies and Amgen stakeholders
Assist with board observer responsibilities, portfolio monitoring, investment updates, and strategic follow-up
Identify opportunities for scientific collaboration, business development engagement, and strategic partnerships
Collaborate with Research, Business Development, Strategy, Corporate Finance, Legal, and other cross-functional partners
Contribute to portfolio reviews, leadership reporting, investment committee discussions, venture strategy development, and market/competitive intelligence strategy

Requirements

Doctorate degree and 4 years in a scientific field and experience in venture capital, corporate venture capital, biotech investing, private equity, investment banking, business development, or transactions; OR Master’s degree and 7 years in a scientific field and experience in the listed areas; OR Bachelor’s degree and 9 years in a scientific field and experience in the listed areas
Advanced scientific expertise in biotechnology, therapeutics, drug discovery, platform technologies, AI-enabled drug development, or healthcare innovation, combined with direct investment or strategic transaction experience
Ability to evaluate biotechnology companies, venture funds, and emerging technologies
Ability to conduct scientific, strategic, competitive, clinical, commercial, and financial diligence
Ability to assess venture financing structures, cap tables, valuations, and investment terms
Strong understanding of biotechnology, pharmaceutical, venture capital, and startup ecosystems
Ability to translate complex scientific and business information into clear investment recommendations
Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills
Ability to engage entrepreneurs, investors, academic founders, and senior industry leaders while managing multiple investment opportunities
