Job summary

Network Connex is seeking an experienced Directional Drill Superintendent to oversee horizontal directional drilling operations for underground fiber optic, telecommunications, utility, and infrastructure projects.

This position provides leadership for crews, equipment, safety, quality, and project execution, working closely with Construction Managers, Project Managers, Foremen, Locators, Operators, customers, and inspectors to ensure on-time delivery.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of progressive directional drill experience.
• Experience supervising multiple drill crews.
• Strong knowledge of underground utilities, telecom, fiber, and heavy civil construction.
• Experience with large-bore directional drilling operations.
• Ability to read drawings, bore profiles, site plans, and utility locates.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily drill operations across projects and crews.
• Lead Drill Foremen, Operators, Locators, and crew members.
• Plan work based on project drawings, bore profiles, site conditions, schedules, and production requirements.
• Ensure crews have the equipment, tooling, materials, and manpower to complete work.
• Oversee operation and utilization of Ditch Witch AT series drills, dirt drills, and other drill equipment.
• Monitor production, bore progress, equipment utilization, and jobsite conditions.
• Review bore plans and ensure drilling operations follow approved plans and specifications.
• Coordinate with drill Locators and Operators regarding bore path, depth, alignment, ground conditions, and drilling progress.
• Provide guidance on drilling methods, tooling, reaming, pullback, and drilling fluid requirements.
• Monitor drilling conditions and assist crews with difficult ground conditions.
• Coordinate equipment mobilization, demobilization, setup, and relocation between jobsites.
• Monitor crew productivity and address production issues affecting schedules.
• Conduct regular jobsite visits and verify work is performed to requirements.
• Ensure utility locates and potholing are completed before drilling.
• Maintain safe working clearances around utilities.
• Review and complete daily production reports and bore logs.

This position provides leadership and oversight for crews, equipment, production, safety, quality, and project execution. The Directional Drill Superintendent will work closely with Construction Managers, Project Managers, Foremen, Locators, Operators, customers, and inspectors to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.

The ideal candidate has significant hands‑on Directional Drill experience and a strong understanding of Ditch Witch AT series drills, dirt drills, large‑bore drilling operations, drilling equipment, tooling, drilling fluids, and underground utility construction.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee daily drill operations across assigned projects and crews.
• Provide leadership and direction to Drill Foremen, Operators, Locators, and crew members.
• Plan and coordinate work based on project drawings, bore profiles, site conditions, schedules, and production requirements.
• Ensure crews have the appropriate equipment, tooling, materials, and manpower to complete assigned work.
• Oversee operation and utilization of Ditch Witch AT series drills, dirt drills, and other drill equipment.
• Monitor production, bore progress, equipment utilization, and jobsite conditions.
• Review bore plans and ensure drilling operations follow approved plans and specifications.
• Coordinate with drill Locators and Operators regarding bore path, depth, alignment, ground conditions, and drilling progress.
• Provide guidance on drilling methods, tooling, reaming, pullback, and drilling fluid requirements.
• Monitor drilling conditions and assist crews in addressing difficult ground conditions or unexpected field conditions.
• Coordinate equipment mobilization, demobilization, setup, and relocation between jobsites.
• Monitor crew productivity and address production issues that may impact project schedules.
• Conduct regular jobsite visits and verify work is being performed according to project requirements.
• Ensure utility locates and required potholing are completed before drilling.
• Ensure crews maintain safe working clearances around existing utilities.
• Review and ensure completion of daily production reports, bore logs, equipment records, and other required documentation.
• Communicate project status, production, manpower, equipment, and safety issues to Superintendent and Project Management.
• Coordinate with customers, inspectors, municipalities, and other contractors as required.
• Assist with estimating production requirements and identifying potential construction challenges.
• Support training and development of Drill Operators, Locators, Foremen, and other field personnel.
• Maintain accountability for jobsite productivity, workmanship, safety, and equipment utilization.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of progressive Directional Drill experience, including experience in leadership or supervisory capacity.
• Experience overseeing multiple Directional Drill crews and/or projects preferred.
• Strong knowledge of underground utility, telecommunications, fiber optic, OSP, or heavy civil construction.
• Experience with large‑bore Directional Drilling operations preferred.
• Strong understanding of bore planning, drilling methods, tooling, reaming, pullback, and drilling fluids.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, bore profiles, site plans, and utility locates.
• Knowledge of underground utility damage prevention and safe excavation practices.
