The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for safely operating horizontal directional drilling machinery and related equipment to install underground utilities. This role follows all safety policies and ensures company and customer project requirements are met.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate directional drill and support equipment in accordance with safety and industry standards.
- Read and interpret project plans, work orders, and utility locate markings.
- Identify and avoid existing underground utilities; potholing and verification as required.
- Assist in site setup, cleanup, and restoration of disturbed areas.
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment and report any malfunctions.
- Comply with all DOT, OSHA, and company regulations and procedures.
- Participate in safety meetings and required training sessions.
- Report all incidents, accidents, or hazards immediately to the supervisor.
- Occasionally support other crew duties as necessary to complete projects.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid CDL Class A driver's license.
- 1+ year of experience operating directional drills in utility construction or related field.
- Able to lift and carry 50-100 lbs, perform repetitive physical work, and work outdoors in all weather.
- Willingness to undergo background and drug screening.
- Understanding of safety requirements and proper use of PPE.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Ditch Witch, Vermeer, or similar boring equipment.
- Competency with electronic locating equipment.
- OSHA 10/30 certification.
- Ability to lead and instruct crew members.
- Strong attention to detail and situational awareness.
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems independently.
- Solid communication and teamwork skills.
- Adaptability and sound judgment under changing conditions.
- Commitment to safety, punctuality, and company policies.
- Work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
- Frequent lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing required.
- Exposure to moderate noise, equipment vibration, and hazardous materials.
Reporting
- Reports directly to the Directional Drill Foreman or Site Supervisor.
