Job summary

The New York Foundling is a longtime nonprofit in New York offering support to children and families. The Direct Support Professional role empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to live fulfilling lives through personalized care and structured activities, while promoting independence and community participation.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and a commitment to compassionate, equitable care. Training in CPR/First Aid is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; experience in direct care or human services preferred.
• Valid NY/NJ/CT/PA driver's license with up to 6 points.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with patience and empathy.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred; additional training a plus.
• Commitment to compassionate, dignified care for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities

• Implement and monitor plans of care, including assessments and behavior plans.
• Provide direct care and assist with daily living activities and medications.
• Facilitate community outings and accompany individuals to appointments.
• Use person-centered approaches and positive behavior support strategies.
• Maintain accurate records, progress notes, and incident reports.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and families on care plans.
• Advocate for rights and promote self-advocacy; act as mandated reporter.
• Administer medications per prescribed schedules and monitor for side effects.
