Position Overview
As a Digital Surface Modeler on the Industrial Design team, you will develop conceptual and production‑ready CAD surface models that become customer‑facing products. You will partner with Mercury Marine’s Engineering, Product Integration, and Manufacturing teams to ensure surfaces meet aesthetic, functional, and manufacturing requirements, supporting the premium brand and performance expectations.
Essential Functions
- Create both conceptual and Class‑A surface geometry for customer‑facing marine systems, including exterior outboard cowlings, peripheral covers, touch‑point‑critical components, marine control systems, or hardware related to exterior displays.
- Develop conceptual surface geometry for programs requiring surface construction exploration, less defined constraints, and rapid iterations. Interpret 2D sketches, renderings, clay models, or foam mockups, using digital models based on existing 3D surface models when appropriate.
- Translate Industrial Design and Engineering criteria into high‑quality CAD surfaces meeting digital craftsmanship standards, ensuring G2/G3 surface continuity, curvature control, highlight quality, and draft‑ready geometry for prototypes or downstream into production‑intent Class‑A surface data.
- Maintain surface integrity through design changes and feedback loops from Engineering criteria, packaging requirements, tooling/molding requirements, CFD analysis feedback, and DFM or supplier‑based feedback.
- Balance multiple CAD projects, manage data, and meet program deadlines with a focus on engineering criteria.
- Participate in design reviews, engineering reviews, milestone gates, and overall technical program reviews.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Transportation Design or Product Design.
- At least 5 years of experience in digital surfacing, both conceptual and Class‑A surface models.
- Exceptionally strong proficiency with Autodesk Alias software.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating surfacing abilities and knowledge of design fundamentals (proportions, volumes/masses, clean surface construction).
- Proficiency in additional tools such as KeyShot and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Awareness of the most recent digital surface modeling techniques.
Compensation and Benefits
The anticipated pay range is $86,500 – $126,800 annually, with a base pay determined by qualifications, experience, business needs, and location. The position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, paid vacation, 401k (up to 4% match), Health Savings Account (company contribution), wellbeing program, product purchase discounts, and more.
