Job summary

Barrington Area Library is seeking a Digital Services Assistant to provide hands-on digital support for customers and staff at our MakerLab. You will guide users on 3D printing, laser cutting, and other digital tools, helping them troubleshoot and complete creative projects.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, familiarity with makerspace tech, and strong communication skills to assist diverse patrons. Part-time schedule includes some evenings and rotating Saturdays, with PTO benefits.

Responsibilities

ABOUT US: The Barrington Area Library is a busy, friendly place, and our state-of-the-art MakerLab, unveiled in 2024, offers a cutting-edge environment for hands-on learning and creative exploration. With the latest technology, including 3D printers, laser cutters, sublimation printing, and digital design tools, the MakerLab empowers customers to bring their ideas to life and dive into the world of innovation. The Digital Services Assistant facilitates the use of the Library’s digital services and resources for our customers, community, and staff.

JOB SUMMARY:

• Provide digital services support to customers and staff.
• Provide technical guidance to customers on a variety of applications, software, and equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutter, and vinyl cutting machine.
• Troubleshoot equipment within the Digital Services spaces.
• Carry out projects successfully while enhancing the customer’s experience through exceptional service.
• Assist with regular maintenance within the space, as assigned.
• Support staff during programs that feature MakerLab and Studio.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Familiarity with makerspace technology.
• Basic knowledge of digital content platforms such as Libby and Hoopla, Adobe Creative Cloud and iLife suite is preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and guide customers through creative projects, adapting instruction to different skill levels and learning needs.
• Effectively coordinate and prioritize tasks, schedule appointments, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to provide excellent customer service through effective communication, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving abilities.

LOCATION: 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL

PAY & BENEFITS: The starting pay range is $21.00 - $22.50 per hour (DOQ). Skills, experience and internal equity will determine offer made. Benefits include:

• Comprehensive Paid Time Off: vacation, personal hours, sick leave, and paid holidays

SCHEDULING: This is a part‑time position, averaging 20-24 hours per week. Scheduling is generally three weekdays (at least one evening, preferably two evenings) plus a rotating Saturday shift. There is some schedule flexibility based on customer appointments and department needs.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: This position will remain open until filled or until November 20, 2026, whichever comes first.
