Job Overview

Undergraduate student wage position for up to 20 hours per week during summer 2026 with potential continuation into the 2026‑2027 academic year. Students with experience or interest in photography, book work, or library work are encouraged to apply.

Students who receive a federal work study award for the fall are encouraged to indicate this in their application, as it may support continuation of the work into the 2026‑2027 academic year.

About the Digital Production Group (DPG)

The DPG is a unit of the University of Virginia Library that photographs rare materials and rare but still circulating books (the "medium rare" collection). It creates, manages, delivers, and expands access to the library’s distinctive digital collections.

Responsibilities

• Care and handling of rare and unique library materials (books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, negatives, etc.)
• Use of software packages: CaptureOne, Adobe Photoshop, and the department’s tracking and project processing software.
• Operate equipment including Phase One medium‑format cameras, a large‑format Cruse scanner for oversized items, Atiz book scanners using Canon cameras, and Epson flatbed scanners (and potentially other professional cameras and tools).
• Follow training and procedures; may assist in project processing and documentation.
• Travel to meetings or programs as required.

Compensation and Hours

Starting pay is $16.71 per hour with a weekly commitment of up to 20 hours. Additional summer work hours may be possible depending on job requirements, worker interests, and availability. Workdays are Monday–Friday with flexible daily windows from 9–5 following paid training.

Physical Demands
