Overview
KETK is searching for a DIGTAL METEOROLOGIST to work at the number one station and news website in the Tyler, TX. market. The successful candidate will be a scientist who knows how to use graphics and other resources to present the day’s weather story in clear, easy-to-understand language. This position will have significant digital responsibilities providing innovative and engaging content for our website KETK.com, KETK+ and our social media platforms.
Responsibilities
- Create graphics for the weather team and ensure they can be used across the department. Stay current on changing weather technology and participate in ongoing training to maximize use of forecasting equipment.
- Work closely with digital management to post up-to-the-minute content on KETK.com, KETK+ and our social media sites.
- Produce and present weather reports for all platforms.
- Ensure that all weather content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
- Write and deliver weather stories in a clear and concise manner.
- Assist in writing, copy editing, researching and coordinating weather programming and other content.
- Shoot and edit compelling stories on weather-related topics.
- Respond to breaking and/or severe weather events and other urgent newsroom situations as required and be ready to go on the air with wall-to-wall coverage in a calm and commanding style.
- Work closely with the weather team to develop comprehensive weather coverage.
- Participate in promotional activities including public appearances.
- Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
- Experience with Baron Weather system is a plus.
- Fluency in English.
- Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to effectively listen to fully understand problems and communicate with a team to shape a solution.
- Strong understanding of the field of meteorology and a proven track record of forecasting.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Flexibility to work any shift.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, and work with minimal supervision.
- Make decisions that impact the results of co-workers and work in close proximity to others.
- Work outdoors occasionally in all weather conditions, and indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.
- Be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
