Job description

The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Dietitian (Clinical) - Home Base Primary Care (HBPC) for the Battle Creek and Benton Harbor catchment area.

Duties

Dietitians in HBPC serve as medical nutrition experts. They work autonomously, applying evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines for all patients, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs. Clinical Dietitians coordinating nutritional care of Veterans collaborate with other healthcare providers, Veterans, caregivers, and the community. They interpret research and utilize whole health principles to develop patient-centered goals and improve outcomes.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing comprehensive nutritional assessment and care planning.
  • Developing and implementing individualized nutrition interventions.
  • Monitoring and evaluating patient progress and adjusting care plans accordingly.
  • Collaborating with healthcare team members to integrate nutrition into overall patient care.
Requirements
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD): Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Exception for GS-07 and GS-09 Only: Dietitians without the RDN/RD credential may be appointed temporarily if they meet specific educational and experiential requirements, but cannot be promoted until credentialed.

Foreign education must be evaluated by ACEND to meet standards. Non-credentialed Dietitians may only be appointed at GS-07 or GS-09 and must work under supervision of credentialed RDNs.

Failure to obtain registration within one year from appointment will result in removal from the occupation.

Grandfathering Provision: Employees in this occupation may meet current requirements if appointed before the standard's effective date, but must meet all requirements if they change roles or re-enter.

English proficiency in spoken and written form is required.

Grade Determinations
GS-07

Experience or education beyond the basic requirements is not necessary.

GS-09

At least one year of experience at the GS-07 level or higher, or a master's degree plus demonstrated KSAs.

GS-11 (Full Performance Level)

At least one year of experience as an RDN equivalent to the next lower grade, with demonstrated KSAs in delivering patient care, interpreting research, developing goals, analyzing data, and collaborating with stakeholders.

Physical Requirements

The work does not inherently include physical requirements that cannot be accommodated. A pre-placement physical is required due to the use of government vehicles in Home Based Primary Care duties.
