Job summary

UW Medicine in Seattle is seeking a Clinical Dietitian to support oncology and immunotherapy patients in inpatient settings at UWMC and the Fred Hutch Hospital. Qualifications

Responsibilities

Education

Position Description

This position will work with cellular/Immunotherapy, hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) as well as hematology oncology patients. The person in this role will see inpatients admitted to both the UWMC oncology units and to the Fred Hutch Hospital. It involves assessing nutritional status and developing evidence-based nutrition care plans for oncology and immunotherapy patients and requires an in-depth understanding of the role of nutrition in critical care; expertise in alternative feeding modalities such as TPN and Tube feeding; and maintaining current knowledge of best practices in oncology and nutrition. The position is also responsible for providing patient education; facilitating communication between other members of the Food Service Department and healthcare teams; overseeing the role of the diet technician; and working with interns and students on a yearly basis.

Primary Job Responsibilities
  • Design evidence-based nutrition care plans for high acuity inpatient oncology population based on nutrition diagnosis and as outlined by departmental standards of care protocols and policies.
  • Provide ongoing evaluation and monitoring of patients by documenting their progression toward meeting prescribed goals in the electronic medical record and by communicating with other members of the healthcare team.
  • Provide recommendations for nutrition support. This includes appropriate recommendations for diet prescriptions as well as for tube feeding and TPN.
  • Provide effective nutrition education to patients and their care providers that takes into consideration their learning abilities, readiness to learn, and cultural beliefs.
  • Actively participate in patient care conferences, medical rounds, and other interdisciplinary care and process improvement teams.
  • Collaborate with dietitians working in the outpatient setting for both UWMC and the Fred Hutch.
  • Maintain current clinical knowledge of best practices for nutrition and actively participate in the process of developing and reevaluating standards of care protocols.
  • Assist with the supervision and oversight of the diet technicians.
  • Precept dietetic interns and UW Nutrition Graduate students on a yearly basis.
  • Model UW Medicine service culture guidelines and exemplify Patients are First philosophy.
  • Position the Nutrition Department to exceed expectations of the medical/surgical teams by developing relationships with physicians, nurse managers, and patient care units
  • Understand nutrition standards and provide care for patients on other services including general surgery, bariatrics, ICU, organ transplant, cardiology, and general medicine patients.
  • Champion the departmental wellness initiative by participating in taste-testing; contributing to internet/intranet site; promoting the efforts of patient food services and retail operations throughout the organization; and participating in the coordination of care between clinical team and the kitchen.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in food and nutrition or dietetics, AND Registration as a Dietitian by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics within three (3) months of hire, AND Washington State Dietitian Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
Desired Qualifications
  • Masters degree, Specialty Certification in Nutrition and Oncology (CSO) or Nutrition Support (CNSC).
