Job summary

BMC Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV is seeking a Dietetic Assistant to support a busy hospital food service operation.

You will perform a range of duties including meal assembly, dish room, utilities, cafeteria service, and cold food production while ensuring quality, safety, and patient satisfaction. The role emphasizes teamwork and adherence to sanitation standards.

Qualifications

• Food handler certification required or obtained within 30 days.
• PIC training may be required by department.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Prepares all work areas for operation, per task assignment including sanitizing
• Set-up area including utensils, restock, clean and organize assigned area
• Produces and maintains attractive, appetizing and quality food and beverage products
• Follows menu cycle, proper portions and standardized recipes; batch production; FIFO
• Greets customers and serves with focus on customer service
• Addresses customer complaints politely and escalates to management as needed
• Cleans spills promptly and removes trash from service areas
• Merchandises area in a clean, uncluttered, attractive and orderly manner
• Ensures sanitation, safety, and quality guidelines are followed
• Documents refrigerator/dish machine temperatures and notifies of malfunctions
• Properly operates, cleans and stores equipment
• Stores and labels food items and chemicals properly

This position may be assigned a variety of fundamental food service duties. Typical assignments include patient tray line (meal assembly), dish room, utilities (floors and trash), cafeteria server, and cold food production. In addition, the Dietetic Assistant will work as a team to deliver high quality food and service to patients and customers.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

• Current Food Handlers card OR obtained within 30 days of hire through ONE of the following, as required by County DHHR:
• StateFoodSafety.com
• Servsafe National Restaurant Association
• Local County Health Department

To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level)

• Person in Charge (PIC) training provided through the County Health Department.

Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

• High school diploma or equivalent.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Prepares all work areas for operation, per task assignment including filling bucket with sanitizing solution, and a clean wiping cloth. Maintain sanitizer strength throughout shift. Change as needed.
• Set-up area including utensils, restock, clean and organize assigned area maintaining cleanliness throughout the shift.
• Produces and maintains attractive, appetizing and quality food and beverage products.
• Follows menu cycle, proper portions and standardized recipes preparing food items in batch production. Utilizes leftovers, using the first in, first out method.
• Greets customers, politely asks for order and efficiently serves customer. Remains focused on the customer and service throughout the encounter.
• Addresses customer complaints in a polite professional manner. Seeks management assistance when needed.
• Cleans spills promptly and post appropriate caution signage. Removes trash from service areas promptly.
• Merchandises area through: Clean, uncluttered, attractive and orderly arrangement of work area.
• Ensures that all activities meet sanitation, safety and quality control guidelines set forth by departmental policies.
• Documents refrigerator, dish machine or other equipment temperatures as assigned. Alerts facilities and management of malfunctioning equipment.
• Properly operates, cleans and stores equipment in assigned area.
• Properly stores and labels food items and chemicals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to push fully loaded tray cart (approx. 250 lbs.).
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

• Requires patient interaction with some conditions/appearance that may be distressing.
• Enter isolation precaution patient rooms with proper protective equipment.
• Kitchen environment that is often noisy.

Skills And Abilities

• Ability to understand written and oral communication.
• Computer skills - know how to use basic computer components (keyboard, mouse, tablet) and basic computer applications such as Microsoft word.
• Telephone skills - know how to use speaker phones, headsets, and telephone etiquette.
