Job description

NHC HealthCare is seeking a Full-Time Dietary Aid to join our team
General Purpose:

Performs various duties related to the production and service of patient meals.

Responsible to:

Director of Dietary / Dietary Manager / Assistant Dietary Manager / Cook

Qualifications:
  • Interest in foodservice and enjoyment working with geriatric and healthcare patients.
  • Willingness to learn food preparation and basic cooking skills.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about therapeutic and modified diets for patients.
  • Understanding of sanitation procedures and commitment to daily practice.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks daily.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Proficiency in English speaking and understanding; reading skills may be required.
  • Ability to read labels, chemical labels, and MSDS sheets, and to handle products safely.
  • Good mental and physical condition.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively with team members across departments.
  • Reliability in fulfilling responsibilities, punctuality, and adherence to scheduled shifts.
  • Possession or willingness to obtain a Food Handler's Certificate or Sanitation Course, as required by state regulations.
  • Ability to work under supervision.
Physical Demands:
  • Standing or walking most of the day; ability to bend, stoop, squat, and twist regularly.
  • Ability to lift 50-60 pounds, sweep, mop, push/pull carts, and climb ladders.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
  • Good vision and hearing to respond to visual and auditory cues.
  • Ability to handle food service equipment safely.
  • Ability to taste and smell foods for quality assessment.
  • Tolerance for temperature changes and noisy, moist environments.
  • Alertness and safety awareness to prevent injuries.
  • No medical conditions that could endanger self or others during work or patient contact.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Includes but is not limited to:

  • Being a self-starter and making independent decisions when necessary.
  • Understanding and complying with all relevant regulations (local, state, federal).
  • Maintaining a safe, secure, and sanitary dietary environment and reporting issues.
  • Conserving supplies, preventing waste, and reporting needs.
  • Receiving, storing, and handling food and supplies properly.
  • Scraping, washing, and sanitizing dishes and utensils; removing broken items.
  • Transporting and storing dishes and supplies, ensuring availability for meal service.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing dish machines, dish room, and work areas.
  • Assisting in food preparation and serving, including therapeutic diets, according to menus and portion control.
  • Communicating effectively with staff, patients, and families.
  • Setting up trays, checking diets and preferences, and delivering trays and carts.
  • Cleaning dining areas and attending training sessions.
  • Supervising the Dietary Department in the absence of managers, reporting to the cook.
  • Adhering to dress code and performing additional tasks as needed.
