Job summary

The City of Fort Lauderdale is seeking an experienced diesel technician to operate, maintain and repair diesel generators, pumps and equipment. You will keep records, manage fuel supply status, and ensure certification and safety compliance.

Responsibilities include diagnosing malfunctions, overhauls, procuring parts, and supporting SOP development. The ideal candidate has 3+ years of diesel experience, a high school diploma or GED, and may have CDL Class B.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; technical training preferred.
• Three or more years of experience operating and maintaining diesel powered generators.
• Veterans’ Preference requires documentation as per Florida statutes.

• Operates and tests diesel powered generators, pumps, and equipment.
• Diagnoses malfunctions; disassembles engines; examines parts for defects and wear.
• Reconditions and/or replaces parts such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves and bushings.
• Performs complete overhaul of diesel engines when required.
• Maintains records of equipment status and certifications.
• Ensures emergency preparedness of equipment.
• Procur es parts and services as needed.
• Assists in preparing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Works around high voltage, rotating equipment and hazardous chemicals.
• Ensures compliance with safety regulations and SOPs.
• Knowledge of Federal, State and County Underground Storage Tank (UST) regulations.
• Performs related work as required.

Minimum Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES & WORK ENVIRONMENT

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency, preferably supplemented with technical training by a diesel manufacturer or vocational/trade school.
• Three or more years of experience operating and maintaining diesel powered generators.

Preferred Qualifications

• A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B or higher with Air Brakes and an acceptable driving record.

As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.
