Job summary

City of Fort Lauderdale is seeking a Utilities Mechanic to install, maintain, fabricate, and repair mechanical equipment across water treatment plants, pump stations, tanks, and storage facilities. The role requires a minimum of one year of mechanical maintenance experience and a CDL Class B with Air Brakes endorsement at the time of application and hire.

It is open to both internal City employees and external applicants under the posted terms.

A Utilities Mechanic installs, maintains, fabricates, and repairs/troubleshoots and performs related preventative maintenance and inspections on mechanical equipment employed in the operation of water treatment plants, pump stations, or related areas.

In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants).

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. • Troubleshoots, inspects, installs, fabricates, maintains, and repairs mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, piping, chemical equipment, conveyers, presses, screens, gear boxes, facility carts, and all other facility machinery/equipment associated within the treatment plants, pump stations, tanks, and water storage facilities, and performs related preventative maintenance and inspections.
• Reviews equipment manuals and maintenance records to develop preventive maintenance schedules.
• Operates and cares for hand and power tools in maintaining, fabricating, and repairing parts for machinery and equipment.
• Submits daily and weekly reports for the tasks and maintenance duties performed.
• Provides assistance to the Diesel Technician, welders, Electrician, and Machinist; performs welding, acetylene burning, brazing, soldering, minor carpentry, and painting, as needed.
• Ensures compliance with safety regulations and standard operating procedures.
• Reading drawing specifications and manufacturer's data sheets.
• Works around medium voltage, rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals.
• May be required to perform "stand-by duty", being available and responding to off-duty emergency call-ins to effect repairs.
• Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

1. Have successfully graduated from a standard high school or trade school or possess a G.E.D. certificate from a recognized institution.
2. Must demonstrate a minimum of one (1) year of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work.
3. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B or higher with Air Brakes endorsement at the time of application and upon hire. Failure to maintain an active CDL endorsement will result in separation from City employment.
4. Prior work experience with installation and maintenance at a water treatment plant in a utility system is preferred.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift, stoop, bend, crawl, kneel and climb ladders up to 30 feet in performing a variety of job‑related tasks. Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
