General Dynamics NASSCO in Norfolk, VA is hiring five Diesel Shaft Mechanics at Journeyman levels J1–J4. The role requires extensive diesel engine and shafting experience, the ability to lead a small crew, read technical manuals and drawings, and work with EPCP/PCP/CWP specifications.

A high school diploma plus five years of related work is expected. Must be able to access Navy installations and shipyards with DBIDS and NAVSEA badges.

Qualifications

  • Typically has a High School diploma or equivalent plus five (5) years directly related experience.
  • Must have main shafting experience.
  • Must have at least 5 years’ experience in diesel engine repair and/or outside machinist.
  • Knowledge of WAF’s a plus.
  • Must have complete work with little guidance from Supervisor.
  • Basic knowledge of shop equipment
  • Must know how to set up a job and correspond with other shops
  • Must be able to replace, repair and test diesel engine components

Responsibilities

  • Oversee a small group of people and lead the job from start to finish via work specification and EPCP/PCP/CWP.
  • Plan, organize and prioritize well and handle problems and concerns without assistance.
  • Proficient with the requirements of the process and the equipment used.
  • Proficient with NAVSEA Standard Items and OSHA standards.
  • Set up jobs and communicate with other shops to coordinate tasks.
  • Read tech manuals and drawings to execute tasks accurately.
