Job summary

XPO Logistics Freight Inc. is seeking a Mechanic Apprentice in Columbus, OH to perform routine maintenance on heavy‑duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailers. You will follow DOT, EPA, OSHA rules and work with shop teams to ensure safety and efficiency.

Qualifications

• 1 year of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair OR a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
• A valid driver’s license
• Brake inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.25
• Vehicle Inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.19
• Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance
• High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
• Prior mechanical experience such as automotive or skilled trades
• Basic computer skills
• Basic welding skills such as Oxy/Acetylene, ARC and MIG

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment in compliance with the manufacturer, DOT, and company schedules
• Apply knowledge and work by DOT, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Interstate Authority, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other rules and regulations, as required
• Access any area of the equipment or vehicle to perform necessary maintenance, including inspecting and performing work in, on or under parts of vehicles and trailers
• Repair or rebuild equipment systems
• Conduct safety inspections of equipment and prepare safety documentation
• Move trailers throughout the property, operating a hostler in all types of weather
• Enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity
• Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
• Ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized
• Interact with operations and shop management

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
