This position is for a four-year Mechanical Maintainer – Mobile Equipment Apprentice, with the possibility of continued employment as a Mechanical Maintainer – Mobile Equipment upon completion of the apprenticeship. Employees in this role are responsible for:
- Receiving work assignments, instructions, drawings, and sketches for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative and predictive maintenance on heavy mobile equipment, including locomotives.
- Analyzing drawings, sketches, schematics, diagnostic equipment, and planning work procedures, including determining tools and equipment needed.
- Working in the shop or field as required.
- Troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic systems.
- Performing preventative and predictive maintenance on mobile heavy equipment, which includes diesel and gas-powered plants, fans, blowers, mechanical power transmission, pumps, hydraulic components, electrical systems, and other mechanical parts.
- Troubleshooting, dismantling, cleaning, inspecting, rebuilding, repairing, replacing, installing, assembling, adjusting, aligning, and lubricating heavy mobile equipment and related components.
- Operating overhead electric cranes and mobile equipment to lift and transport materials.
- Operating heavy mobile equipment for pick-up and delivery tasks.
- Completing miscellaneous tasks such as filling out standard forms, lubricating equipment, rigging parts and equipment for movement or lifting, and maintaining tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized manner.
- Working various shifts, including straight afternoons, midnights, or swing shifts.
Minimum requirements include:
- High School diploma or GED and at least 1 year of experience working as a mechanic on heavy mobile equipment, or completion of a trade/vocational school program on locomotive repair.
Preferred experience includes:
- High School diploma or GED and 2+ years of experience working as a mechanic on heavy mobile equipment, or completion of a trade/vocational school program on locomotive repair.
- Current and valid driver's license.
Physical requirements include:
- Ability to climb and work at heights of up to 10 feet.
- Ability to lift 75 pounds at one time and 50 pounds multiple times a day.
- Ability to operate trucks or motor vehicles.
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures.
