Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines and heavy construction equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience working on CAT equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read service manuals, schematics, and repair documentation.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Class B CDL with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements may be required for some positions.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including day or night shifts when necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, transmissions, and drivetrain components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance services, including 250-hour, 500-hour, 1,000-hour, and 2,000-hour service intervals.
  • Conduct equipment inspections and troubleshoot mechanical issues.
  • Maintain and repair heavy construction equipment such as: Excavators, Dozers, Wheel loaders, Articulated haul trucks, Skid steers, On-road trucks.
  • Perform oil changes, fluid checks, and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Fuel equipment and maintain accurate fuel logs.
  • Ensure equipment complies with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Complete maintenance records, repair documentation, and work orders.
  • Coordinate with operations and project teams to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.

Ames Federal Contracting Group is seeking a skilled Diesel Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel‑powered heavy equipment and construction vehicles used in highway, civil, mining, rail, and industrial construction projects. The mechanic plays a critical role in ensuring equipment reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical training in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or a related field.
  • OEM certifications (CAT, Cummins, etc.).
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Construction industry experience.
