Job summary

Ames Construction is seeking an experienced heavy equipment technician in New York to diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines and hydraulic systems on a range of heavy construction equipment. You will perform 250–2000 hour service intervals, conduct inspections, log fuel usage, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

Flexible day/night shifts may be required, with strong diagnostic skills and the ability to work independently or in a team.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience repairing diesel engines and heavy construction equipment.
• Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
• Experience with CAT equipment preferred.
• Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems; read manuals and schematics.
• Valid driver’s license; CDL may be required.
• Flexible schedules; day or night shifts.
• Physical ability to lift and work outdoors.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, transmissions, and drivetrain components.
• Perform preventive maintenance services, including 250‑hour, 500‑hour, 1,000‑hour, and 2,000‑hour service intervals.
• Conduct equipment inspections, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and maintain heavy construction equipment such as excavators, dozers, wheel loaders, articulated haul trucks, skid steers, and on‑road trucks.
• Perform oil changes, fluid checks, routine maintenance tasks, and fuel equipment management while maintaining accurate fuel logs.
• Ensure equipment compliance with safety and regulatory requirements; complete maintenance records, repair documentation, and work orders.
• Coordinate with operations and project teams to minimize equipment downtime and adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines and heavy construction equipment.
• Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
• Experience with CAT (Caterpillar) equipment preferred.
• Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems; ability to read service manuals, schematics, and repair documentation.
• Valid driver’s license; Class B CDL with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements may be required.
• Ability to work flexible schedules, including day or night shifts when necessary; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Physical ability to lift, carry heavy tools and components, work outdoors in varying weather, stand, bend, kneel, climb, and operate service trucks and shop equipment.
• Ensure compliance with CMMC, FAR, and Accounting Standards in all Federal efforts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical training in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or related field.
• OEM certifications (CAT, Cummins, etc.), welding and fabrication experience, and construction industry experience.
