Summary

We are seeking a Diesel Engine Shop Support Technician to provide support at Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) Product Family located in San Diego, CA. This technician will be responsible for assessment, inspection, disassembly, repair, overhaul, reassembly, and testing of US Navy shipboard main and electric power diesel engines using technical documentation and NAVSEA drawings.

What You Will Do
  • Provide guidance on U.S. Navy shipboard main propulsion and electric power generation diesel engines and associated support equipment.
  • Conduct ship‑checks to determine scope of work and correct material selection in accordance with applicable NAVSEA drawings and other technical reference documents.
  • Use NAVSEA drawings/blueprints, technical manuals, APLs, vendor catalogs, and OEM technical representatives to accurately identify and select materials and repair parts required for engine repairs and overhauls.
  • Provide journeyman‑level support to assess, inspect, disassemble, repair, overhaul, reassemble, and test the following diesel engines:
    • Colt Pielstick, Model PC 2.5
    • Colt Pielstick, Model PA6B STC
    • Caterpillar, Model 3512B
    • General Motors, Model EMD 645E
    • American Locomotive (ALCO), Model 251-C
    • Isotta‑Fraschini, Model 36SS6V
    • MTU, Model 20V 8000 M90
    • Caterpillar, Model 3608
  • Utilize shop equipment including hydrostatic test stand, precision measuring equipment, Woodward Governor test machine, fuel oil injection pump and nozzle test machines, Chris Marine valve/valve seat grinder, Chris Marine cylinder honing machine, hydraulic cylinder head bolt stretching tool, manual and automatic parts washing machine, parts and blasting machine, hydraulic torque wrenches, portable electrical, pneumatic, and hand tools, and government‑owned vehicles such as forklifts and electric/gas carts.
  • Provide journeyman‑level support for maintenance and repairs of shipboard oily waste separator systems, including the 5‑GPM Oily Waste Membrane System AAE, Model 740956.
  • Disassemble, inspect, repair/overhaul/replace, reassemble, and test oily waste separator system equipment and components including membranes.
What You Must Have
  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience.
  • Own hand tools as designated per trade specialty.
  • Physically able to climb and work on ships in an industrial environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment and systems, ship drawings, and technical documents.
  • Proficiency in inspecting, disassembling, repairing, overhauling, reassembling, and testing marine diesel engines and oily‑waste‑separator systems using specialized shop equipment and precision tools.
  • Complete OSHA 10 course, low‑speed vehicle training, and PQS 301 Craftsman qualification within ninety (90) days.
  • May require forklift license depending on shop need; forklift physical ability required.
  • Obtain and maintain CAC/DBIDS ID Base access and DoD Security Clearance.
  • Start date contingent upon approval of base access required for this position and continued employment.
Bonus Points For
  • A current, valid DoD confidential security clearance or higher.
  • Recent Marine Diesel Engine Technician experience.
  • Recent Oily Waste Separator systems experience.
  • Prefer technical/professional certifications.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes; no less than 30 lbs.
  • Work on and climb ladders, in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces.
  • Perform duties involving high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • May require wearing a respirator.
