Diesel Engine Shop Support Technician – Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC), San Diego, CA.

Summary

Provide assessment, inspection, disassembly, repair, overhaul, reassembly, and testing of U.S. Navy shipboard main and electric power diesel engines and associated support equipment using technical documentation, NAVSEA drawings, and shop equipment.

What You Will Do
  • Provide guidance on U.S. Navy shipboard main propulsion and electric power generation diesel engines and associated support equipment.
  • Conduct ship‑checks to determine scope of work and correct material selection per NAVSEA drawings and technical reference documents.
  • Use NAVSEA drawings, technical manuals, APLs, vendor catalogs, and OEM representatives to identify and select repair parts for ship diesel engines.
  • Perform Journeyman‑level support to assess, inspect, disassemble, repair, overhaul, reassemble, and test the following diesel engines.
  • Use shop equipment such as hydrostatic test stand, precision measuring equipment, Woodward Governor test machine, fuel oil injection pump/nozzle test machines, Chris Marine valve/honour grinder, hydraulic cylinder head bolt stretching tool, parts washing and blasting machines, hydraulic torque wrenches, portable electrical, pneumatic, and hand tools, and government‑owned vehicles including forklifts.
  • Provide Journeyman‑level support for maintenance and repair of shipboard oily waste separator systems, including 5‑GPM Oily Waste Membrane System AAE, Model 740956.
  • Disassemble, inspect, repair/overhaul/replace, reassemble, and test oily waste separator system equipment and components including membranes.
What You Must Have
  • High school education or trade school or equivalent and 4 years of related experience.
  • Own hand tools designated per trades specialty.
  • Physically able to climb and work on ships in an industrial environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment and systems, ship drawings, technical documents, and manuals.
  • Must be able to inspect, disassemble, repair, overhaul, reassemble, and test marine diesel engines and oily‑waste‑separator systems using specialized shop equipment and precision tools.
  • Complete OSHA 10 course, low‑speed vehicle training (for operation of carts), and PQS 301 Craftsman qualification within ninety (90) days.
  • May require forklift license depending on shop needs; forklift physical condition required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CAC/DBIDS ID Base access and DoD Security Clearance.
  • Start date contingent upon approval of base access.
Bonus Points For
  • A current, valid DoD confidential security clearance or higher.
  • Recent Oil Waste Separator system experience.
  • Professional certifications.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes (minimum 30 lbs).
  • Work on and climb ladders, in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces.
  • Perform duties that may involve high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, working aloft or over vessel sides.
  • May be required to wear a respirator.
