Auto Mechanics (Diesel), under supervision, overhaul diesel engines and component assemblies used in diesel-powered vehicles. They troubleshoot mechanical defects, make minor repairs and adjustments in the field, overhaul diesel engines, transmissions, and fuel systems, align wheels, adjust tracks, repair steering equipment, reline and adjust brakes, and may transmit orders to other journeymen. They may supervise machinist helpers, automotive service workers, and other personnel, train assigned personnel, prepare reports, maintain records and inventories, and operate motor vehicles or equipment. All Auto Mechanics (Diesel) perform related work.
Please note: Some physical activities and environmental conditions include working in non-temperature controlled environments, climbing ladders, moving heavy parts, crawling, working near hazardous materials and engine exhaust fumes.
Qualification Requirements:
Six months of acceptable experience is credited for each year of helper or apprentice experience or relevant education.
Candidates must possess a New York State Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) or a valid Motor Vehicle Driver License and a Learner's Permit for a Class B CDL at the time of appointment. Applicants hired with a Learner's Permit must obtain the Class B CDL within six months. The CDL must be maintained without restrictions for employment duration.
Additional certifications may be required depending on the agency, including Motor Vehicle Inspector certifications in various categories and emissions.
