Job summary

Henry Ford Health in Detroit is seeking a skilled Dialysis Clinical Technician to join the Acute Dialysis team. You will provide dialysis treatments, monitor patients, and work with nephrology and ICU teams to ensure safe, effective care during hospitalization.

The role includes equipment setup and maintenance, administering medications as prescribed, and educating patients and families about dialysis procedures and self-care. A CCHT certification within 18 months is required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a dialysis technician training program preferred.
  • Certification as a Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) within 18 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver expert dialysis treatments by following prescribed protocols and physician orders with precision and care.
  • Keep a close eye on patients during treatment—monitoring vital signs, spotting changes, and responding quickly to keep everyone safe and comfortable.
  • Master the dialysis machines by setting them up, operating them and tackling routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Administer medications and intravenous fluids exactly as prescribed, ensuring patients receive the care they need.
  • Educate patients and families about dialysis procedures, dietary tips, and self-care strategies that help them thrive.
  • Keep meticulous records that tell the complete story of each patient's treatment journey and progress.
  • Champion infection control and safety by upholding the highest standards in our dialysis unit daily.

As a Clinical Dialysis Technician, you will play a vital role in providing dialysis treatments and ensuring the well-being of our patients.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

The Acute Dialysis specializes in providing renal replacement therapy and comprehensive care for hospitalized patients with acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD) exacerbations, and other conditions requiring dialysis during their hospital stay. Our team offers targeted management for patients with acute or chronic renal conditions by addressing fluid overload, electrolyte imbalances, and toxin removal when kidney function is impaired. We provide temporary and emergency dialysis therapy to stabilize patients and support their seamless transition to long‑term outpatient care when needed.

The department delivers a full spectrum of dialysis care, including:

  • Hemodialysis (HD):Administered in patient rooms or in our 4 bay hospital unit.
  • Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT):Designed for critically ill ICU patients unable to tolerate traditional dialysis.
  • Emergency Dialysis:Offered for acute conditions such as hyperkalemia, acidosis, or toxin removal.
  • Intraoperative Dialysis:Done in the Operating room as patients are having surgeries and transplant.

The acute dialysis team consists of:

  • Nephrologists:Leading care plans, prescribing dialysis parameters, and managing associated conditions.
  • Dialysis Nurses and Dialysis Technicians:Experts in operating dialysis machines, managing vascular access, and monitoring patient outcomes. Responsible for setting up and maintaining dialysis equipment.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: We work in partnership with ICU, nephrology, surgery, cardiology, and infectious disease teams to ensure high‑quality patient care.

Our department employs advanced technology, including:

  • Fresenius Blue Star Dialysis Machines:For in‑room treatments and ICU settings.
  • Portable MarCor 300H Water Purification Systems:for in room treatments.
  • CRRT Machines (NxStage and Fresenius):Designed for continuous therapy in critical care environments.
