The Biomedical Technician is responsible for overseeing the overall operational condition, maintenance, and repair of all water treatment equipment, medical equipment, and mechanical/electrical systems to ensure patient safety and the safety of all staff operating such equipment for their assigned clinic(s).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties and tasks may be assigned:
- Demonstrate effective use of supplies and staff labor hours.
- Assist with purchasing: place orders and perform weekly and month-end inventory counts.
- Familiar with inventory control procedures (FIFO) and assist in documentation and control of excess inventory.
- Perform duties to meet patient care or operational needs of the clinic.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain equipment as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Repair, calibrate, test, clean, and disinfect dialysis machines, water distribution loop, and RO units according to protocol.
- Perform water quality checks, including free chlorine, total chlorine, and water hardness testing.
- Conduct safety checks on all pretreatment water equipment, including carbon tanks, water softeners, RO units, UV lamps, and ultrafilters.
- Collect samples of RO water and dialysate for microbiology testing as per protocol.
- Collect water samples for AAMI analysis testing as per protocol.
- Disinfect the central bicarbonate system and mixing tank according to protocol.
- Disinfect RO, distribution system, and hemodialysis machines as per protocol.
- Perform all duties within the limitations established by company policies, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Perform electrical safety checks on dialysis machines and related equipment.
- Be familiar with operation manuals and manufacturer recommendations; capable of starting up and shutting down equipment if necessary.
- Maintain preventative maintenance programs and documentation.
- Keep accurate maintenance records for equipment.
- Understand the function and safe operation of water treatment and related systems.
- Address environmental issues impacting safety.
- Mix bicarbonate and acid concentrate solutions according to protocol.
- Assist with receiving, storing, and stocking supplies.
- Be familiar with all emergency equipment and procedures.
- Use safety measures including PPE as necessary.
- Follow OSHA regulations and update MSDS as required.
- Maintain contacts for emergency repairs and obtain quotes from approved contractors.
- Present technical summaries in QAPI meetings.
- Collaborate with the Administrator to meet clinic needs.
- Promote guest customer service standards and develop effective relationships.
- Respond to inquiries or concerns effectively.
- Participate in staff meetings, in-service, and continuing education.
- Complete technical training and instruct staff on equipment use and care.
- Participate in team efforts and promote collaboration.
