Job summary

GTG Peterbilt in Cedar Rapids is seeking an experienced Diagnostic Technician to lead our Service Department and oversee daily operations, ensuring top‑quality diesel repairs. You will supervise technicians, communicate clearly with customers, and drive efficient repair workflows.

Ideal candidates have 4+ years in supervisory service roles, strong communication and problem‑solving skills, and familiarity with DOT safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4+ years of service technician experience (lead or supervisory preferred).
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Familiarity with DOT regulations and safety protocols.
  • Excellent leadership and organizational abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support service technicians in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines and equipment.
  • Greet customers professionally in person or by phone.
  • Explain repairs, estimates, recalls, and maintenance recommendations clearly.
  • Maintain knowledge of heavy‑duty repair best practices.
  • Perform thorough diagnostic procedures to identify customer problems.
  • Inspect vehicles for emissions and safety compliance.
  • Keep accurate paperwork for customers and shop records.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work environment.
  • Follow up with customers on repair status.
  • Enter repair orders into scheduling system in arrival order.

Are you a skilled diesel technician ready to take the lead? We’re looking for an experienced Diagnostic Technician to join our Service Department. In this role, you’ll oversee daily operations, support our team of technicians, and ensure top-quality service for our customers.


Diagnostic Technician: Ideal candidates will have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Foreman, Lead Mechanic, or Service Writer. A polished professional appearance and excellent communication skills are essential.


Requirements


  • Supervise and support service technicians in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines and equipment.

  • Greet customers in a professional and courteous manner when they enter the service department or over the telephone.

  • Discuss clearly needed repair work, estimates, and advise on any outstanding recalls or factory recommended preventative maintenance.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of the industry’s current best practices in heavy duty repair.

  • Conduct extensive diagnostic procedures to determine the source of customer problems and provide accurate repair recommendations.

  • Inspect vehicles according to the state and federal requirements for emissions and safety.

  • Maintain legible and accurate paperwork for both the customer and shop record.

  • Clean and maintain the work environment to ensure equipment longevity and workplace safety.

  • Continually follow up with customers on status of repairs.

  • Complete repair orders by asking good diagnostic questions to identify customer needs/concerns and record the information accurately.

  • Enter all incoming repair orders into the scheduling system in the order in which they are received.

  • Identify repair orders that require special handling, such as rush, customer waiting, special problem, comeback, etc.

  • Contact customer for approval of additional repairs or maintenance as needed and keep accurate documentation.

  • Follow up with the customer after truck repairs are completed, to assure expectations were met.

  • Effective use of problem solving and customer service skills

  • Clearly communicate warranty information and policies to customers.

  • Keep service manager informed of all potential issues involving repairs, customers, or equipment.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • 4+ years of service technician experience (lead or supervisory experience a plus).

  • Possess superior customer service skills.

  • Computer proficient.

  • Familiarity with DOT regulations and safety protocols.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent leadership and communication abilities.

  • Excellent organizational skills required.


EDUCATION:


  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Combination of education, training, or experience provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
