Job description

Summary

The Hampton VA Medical Center is seeking a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist to join their team. The technologist will operate MRI scanners within the Diagnostic Imaging Service to perform MRI examinations essential for diagnosing medical conditions. These studies may involve standard or specialized scan protocols and pulse sequences.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA policy.
  • Certification: Must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography (R).
  • Advanced ARRT certification is required for independent duties in computed tomography (CT), MRI, or Mammography (M).
  • Education: Completion of a 24-month or equivalent post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by JRCERT or recognized agencies.
  • Credentialing Standards: Must meet the standards of the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981 and be certified as a radiographer.
Grade Determinations:

For GS-09 level, candidates need at least one year of experience equivalent to GS-8 demonstrating clinical competencies, and the ability to perform independently as an advanced DRT. Assignments may include complex imaging procedures and specialized MRI duties, requiring additional knowledge of MRI physics, safety, and equipment.

Preferred Experience:

At least 1 year of MRI experience is preferred. For more information, visit VA Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements:

Position involves moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), bending, standing for up to 6 hours, and handling equipment and coils requiring twisting and reaching.

Duties
  • Perform daily MRI scanner start-up and shutdown, assist with patient positioning, and operate the scanner.
  • Monitor scan parameters and image quality, adjust as needed.
  • Review studies immediately after completion for quality and accuracy.
  • Coordinate with radiologists for protocol approval and adjustments.
  • Assist with scheduling and patient preparation, including screening and contrast media handling.
  • Ensure MRI safety standards are followed, monitor patients for discomfort or adverse reactions.
  • Maintain documentation and perform routine safety and quality checks.
Work Schedule and Benefits

Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Benefits include paid leave, parental leave, childcare subsidy, retirement plans, federal insurance, and more. This position is not virtual or eligible for relocation assistance.
