Job description

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the EDRP application.

Duties

This Diagnostic Radiologic Technician (MRI) position is in Diagnostic Imaging services at the VA Boston Healthcare System, West Roxbury, MA campus. This is a part-time position at 16 hours per week. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing diagnostic imaging procedures, specifically MRI scans.
  • Ensuring patient safety and comfort during procedures.
  • Maintaining and calibrating imaging equipment.
  • Documenting procedures and maintaining accurate records.
  • Collaborating with healthcare team members to provide quality patient care.
Requirements
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/26/2025.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.)
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other recognized accrediting agencies.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT)(R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include MRI duties, with demonstrated clinical competency and passing the designated examination.
  • English Language Proficiency: RTs/RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Grade Determinations

In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria are used for grade assignment:

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-9:
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience equivalent to GS-8 demonstrating competencies such as checking scanners, calibrating parameters, reviewing patient records, monitoring physiologic changes, and understanding anatomy and physiology.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to perform complex scans balancing patient and staff needs.
  • Knowledge of medical record gathering techniques.
  • Assessment skills for contraindications.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid, life support, aseptic techniques, and patient care procedures.

May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision as per VA standards. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected is GS-9.

Physical Requirements:

Light to moderate lifting (up to 44 pounds), pushing, reaching, standing (6-8 hours), crawling, kneeling, and rapid mental/muscular coordination.
