Job description

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment initiative. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after a complete review of the application.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of 06/26/2025.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, as per VA Policy.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time, 24-month or longer post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by JRCERT or equivalent recognized agency.
  • Certification: Certification in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT-R).
  • Advanced Certification: Required for MRI or Mammography duties, demonstrating clinical competency and passing the designated exam.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).

Grade Determinations:

For GS-9: At least 1 year of experience equivalent to GS-8 demonstrating competencies such as scanner operation, patient assessment, and knowledge of anatomy.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to balance patient and staff needs during complex procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical record gathering, contraindication assessment, and basic life support.
  • Understanding of aseptic techniques, patient care, and anatomy.

Physical Requirements:

  • Light to moderate lifting (up to 44 pounds), pushing, pulling, reaching, walking/standing, crawling, kneeling, and rapid coordination.

Duties

This MRI Technologist position is part-time (16 hours/week) within Diagnostic Imaging at VA Boston Healthcare System, West Roxbury MA. Responsibilities include operating a 1.5 or 3 Tesla MRI, maintaining equipment, ensuring safety, and supporting patient care. Work hours are Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. The role involves proactive problem-solving, equipment management, and adherence to safety protocols. This position is in the Excepted Service, covered by a bargaining unit, and may require work at various VA Boston campuses.
