Job summary

Kemper is seeking a skilled DevOps Engineer to join our Birmingham team, focusing on building and maintaining scalable CI/CD pipelines and platform automation. You will work across on‑premise and AWS cloud environments, collaborating with security, application development, and operations teams.

Responsibilities include automating deployments, managing container platforms, and improving developer experience while ensuring security and reliability of platforms in a fast-paced agile setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems/Technology, or equivalent and/or DevOps related work experience (development or infrastructure automation)
• Understanding of the DevOps principles and patterns in an enterprise organization
• Hands-on experience with AWS services and cloud infrastructure
• Strong understanding of infrastructure as code (IaC), configuration management, and automation practices
• Demonstrated understanding of source-code management processes using Git and enterprise Git platforms
• Programming or scripting experience in one or more of the following: Python, Bash/PowerShell, .NET, or Java
• Experience creating and maintaining code‑defined infrastructure using technologies such as CloudFormation, Terraform, AWS CDK, or similar tools
• Experience developing solutions with AWS services and enterprise DevOps tools
• Solid understanding of public cloud, networking, IAM/security, and highly available infrastructure; AWS experience strongly preferred
• Experience with remote administration and automated configuration of Linux and Windows systems
• Experience with containers and Kubernetes/EKS, including deployments, configuration, troubleshooting, and operational support preferred
• Build automation experience, including multi-stage pipelines, shared automation, credentials, and deployment dependencies preferred

Responsibilities

• Ensure quality, reliability, security, and efficiency of DevOps platforms and SDLC tooling
• Maintain and improve CI/CD processes that support automated software builds, testing, releases, and deployments
• Design and automate cloud and hybrid infrastructure, including build and test environments, AWS services, container platforms, and deployment workflows
• Provide automation, CI/CD, source control, artifact management, and cloud platform expertise to Application Development teams
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and report on the health, availability, capacity, and performance of build, deployment, and shared DevOps infrastructure
• Support and administer enterprise engineering platforms such as Jenkins, GitLab, JFrog Artifactory/Xray, SonarQube, and AWS-based services
• Support Kubernetes/EKS workloads and platform services, including deployment, configuration, access, observability, and troubleshooting
• Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code and automation for AWS infrastructure, Linux and Windows systems, and repeatable platform operations
• Partner with security and infrastructure teams to implement vulnerability management, secure configuration, access controls, compliance requirements, and hardened operating-system images
• Maintain appropriate technical documentation, operational procedures, and project documentation for platform changes, builds, releases, and automation

This role works as part of a team responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and improving enterprise DevOps and platform engineering capabilities across on-premise and AWS cloud environments. The team supports continuous integration and automated release processes, source-code management, artifact management, container platforms, infrastructure automation, security tooling, and the shared platforms used by application development teams.
The focus will be on maintaining secure, reliable, and scalable engineering platforms while improving the efficiency of development, testing, infrastructure provisioning, and product release processes. The DevOps Engineer will work in a dynamic, fast-paced agile environment and will partner closely with application, cloud, infrastructure, security, and operations teams to automate repeatable work, troubleshoot platform issues, and continuously improve developer experience.
