Position Overview
Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – Southbury Training School is hiring ten (10) full‑time, seasonal Developmental Services Workers 1 for the summer season ending no later than October 15, 2026. The work location is Southbury, CT.
Position Highlights
- Full‑time seasonal (70 hours bi‑weekly)
- Shift options: first or second shift (6:30 am–1:30 pm or 2:30 pm–9:30 pm)
- Regular days off vary by cottage – e.g., Sunday & Monday or Friday & Saturday
Responsibilities
- Assists with individualized programming for persons with intellectual disability
- Provides instruction in activities of daily living, personal habits, hygiene, social relationships
- Participates in therapeutic programs and development of individual capabilities
- Implements individual program plans and reinforces appropriate behavior
- Prepares, serves, and feeds meals; performs housekeeping duties to maintain a clean environment
- Supports social and recreational activities; handles optional medication administration under training
Qualifications
- At least 18 years old as of May 16, 2026
- Full season availability and completion of all DDS training
- Valid Red Cross Water‑front Lifeguard certification, including CPR and First Aid
- Valid motor vehicle license
- Ability to perform emergency first aid
- Valid certifications maintained throughout employment
- Pass a pre‑employment physical exam
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working or volunteering with individuals with disabilities
- Experience in camp, park, or other recreational settings
Special Requirements
- May be required to possess and maintain Medication Certification per Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing
- May need to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language
- May require a valid Connecticut driver license with Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver’s License for designated positions
- May need to travel
Physical & Working Conditions
- Must have physical and emotional health to perform duties; physical examination may be required
- May lift and restrain individuals, be exposed to communicable diseases, risk of injury from assaultive individuals, and unpleasant conditions
