Job summary

The Flint Cultural Center Corporation is seeking a Development Director to lead a comprehensive fundraising program supporting Sloan/Longway, exhibits, and educational initiatives. The role drives major gifts, works with the CEO, and guides a five-person development team.

You will cultivate donors, manage relationships, and coordinate with the Board to advance fundraising campaigns and events while stewarding the organization’s mission and impact.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, or related field with 5–7 years of progressive fundraising experience
• 2+ years’ experience working with nonprofit boards and leadership
• Experience supervising staff and leading teams
• Demonstrated proficiency with donor management systems and fundraising analytics tools
• Proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office and other common programs
• Strong interpersonal communication and ability to work well with others

Responsibilities

• Achieve annual fundraising goals of $2.0 million+ through diverse revenue streams
• Maintain an active portfolio of major gift prospects and donors with cultivation and stewardship plans
• Utilize donor management systems to track activity, performance, engagement and outcomes
• Oversee department staff including Grants Manager, Grants Coordinator, Membership Coordinator and Development Coordinator
• Lead performance management, evaluations, and talent development for the team
• Partner with Board and Fund Development Committee to enhance engagement and campaigns
• Plan and execute fundraising events such as galas and donor cultivation socials

General Description

The Development Director leads development and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising strategy supporting annual operations, strategic initiatives, capital projects, exhibits, educational programming, and long-term organizational sustainability. The Development Director assumes major responsibility for securing gifts, working with and directing the five-person development team. The Development Director works with the CEO to facilitate major gifts and campaigns. The Development Director’s fundraising efforts will enhance program and exhibit development for Sloan/Longway, and support the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and sponsors. The Development Director will embrace and effectively articulate the organization’s mission and vision.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for achieving annual fundraising goals of $2.0 million+ through diversified revenue streams including individual giving, corporate sponsorships, foundation support, major gifts, grants, special events, planned giving, campaigns, and membership programs
• Maintain an active portfolio of major gift prospects and donors, developing and executing individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies
• Ensure effective utilization of donor management systems (Blackbaud/Altru) to track prospect activity, fundraising performance, donor engagement, and stewardship outcomes
• Serve as a department head, participating in management meetings and overseeing and directing the positions of Grants Manager, Grants Coordinator, Membership Coordinator, and Development Coordinator
• Monitor employee performance, conduct regular performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and implement corrective actions when necessary to maintain team excellence
• Serve as an ambassador for the Flint Institute of Science and History within the philanthropic, business, governmental, and cultural sectors of the community
• Partner with the Board of Directors and its Fund Development Committee to strengthen philanthropic engagement, fundraising participation, prospect identification, and community ambassador activities
• Lead planning and execution of fundraising special events, such as the Night at the Museum Gala, Car and Bars, Discovery Society Socials and other development events

Requirements

Education/Qualifications/Skills Required

• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Marketing, or related field, and/or five to seven years’ experience of progressively responsible fundraising or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 2 or more years’ experience working with nonprofit boards and leadership
• Experience in employee supervision and leading teams
• Demonstrated proficiency in using donor management systems and fundraising analytics tools
• Competency with computer software, including Microsoft Office suite and other commonly used programs
• Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work well with others
• A demonstrated ability to raise major gifts
• Sound organizational skills, detail oriented, and the capability to complete complex tasks successfully and follow up on tasks in a timely fashion
• Excellent verbal and written skills
• Must be self-motivated and creative
• Requires an understanding of marketing functions within the context of development
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
• Ability to lift up to 15 lbs.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time
