Job summary

The Howard County Arts Council (HoCo Arts) in Ellicott City, MD, is seeking a Development Director to lead fundraising, communications, and community engagement in a fast-paced nonprofit setting. This is a full-time, exempt management role reporting to the Executive Director, supervising three part-time staff, and driving annual revenue goals with strategic outreach to donors and partners.

Salary is $65,000–$75,000 based on experience, with health benefits, PTO, and retirement options.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years nonprofit or office administration experience.
  • At least 3 years development/fundraising experience with increasing responsibilities.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, relationship-building, and project-management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Salesforce, and/or similar applications.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with Board members, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be able to operate an automobile.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and sit for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with existing donors and new prospects.
  • Coordinate fundraising, communications, and community engagement across the organization.
  • Manage and supervise three part-time employees.
  • Maintain and manage Salesforce, financial/accounting systems, and communications platforms.
  • Represent HoCo Arts at community events and cultivate relationships with community partners.
  • Provide administrative and technical support to the Executive Director.
  • Contribute to the goals and activities of a small, community-based nonprofit arts organization.

Salary: $65,000–$75,000, based on experience

About the Position

The Howard County Arts Council (HoCo Arts), a multi-purpose nonprofit arts agency, seeks a self-directed, outgoing individual for an upper-management position in a small, fast-paced office environment.

The Development Director is responsible for planning and driving fundraising, community engagement, and communications strategies that sustain and grow contributions and revenues in support of HoCo Arts’ annual operating budget and revenue goals. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

The Development Director is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive fundraising, communications, and community engagement activities. The position provides leadership throughout the organization to ensure a collaborative and coordinated approach among the Board, staff, and constituents.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies to meet annual revenue goals.
  • Cultivate and strengthen existing relationships while developing new relationships critical to HoCo Arts’ long-term success and stability.
  • Coordinate fundraising, communications, and community engagement efforts across the organization.
  • Manage and supervise three part-time employees.
  • Maintain and manage Salesforce, financial/accounting systems, and communications platforms.
  • Represent HoCo Arts at community events and cultivate relationships with community partners.
  • Provide administrative and technical support to the Executive Director.
  • Contribute to the overall goals and activities of a small, community-based nonprofit arts organization.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of nonprofit or office administration experience.
  • At least 3 years of development/fundraising experience, with progressively increasing responsibilities.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, relationship-building, and project-management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Salesforce, and/or similar applications.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with Board members, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be able to operate an automobile.
  • Ability to operate computers and other office equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and remain seated for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and climb without difficulty.
Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt management position within a community-based nonprofit arts organization. The position requires a minimum of 40 hours per week, with additional hours as needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

This is an in-person, on-site position based in Ellicott City, Maryland. Some evening and weekend hours are required.
