Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Write and track grant applications and reports; analyze donor trends.
  • Manage donor data and donor acknowledgement processes.

  • Plan social media strategy and coordinate content for website updates.

ABOUT LITERACY SOURCE

Literacy Source is a non-profit community learning center in Seattle providing free instruction to more than 1,000 adults annually from underserved populations. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Development and Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing Literacy Source’s annual fundraising plan and for coordinating communications to promote programs and fund development. The DCM partners with the Managing Director, Fund Development Committee, other staff and board members to steward our existing relationships and help us grow individual giving to support programs and organization development. The position includes event planning, grant writing, donor research, relationship building, and managing the donor database.

The Development and Communication Manager reports to the Co-ED, Managing Director.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Co-Executive Directors and the Fund Development Committee to establish annual case for funding, fundraising goals and plans for achieving them.
  • Cultivate, maintain and grow individual donor engagement (for major gifts and all other individual givers). Ensure robust and timely donor appreciation.
  • Write and track grant applications and reports.
  • Create reports and analyze donor and fundraising trends.
  • Manage donor data base, including entering, acknowledging and recording all donations and donor information.
  • Provide staff support to Fund Development Committee and to assist board members in participating in fundraising activities, including donor solicitation.
Communications
  • Manage and coordinate agency communications for donor engagement and overall community connection.
  • Produce regular newsletters, Annual Report, email blasts and other donor and promotional communications, with support from program staff providing content.
  • Plan, coordinate and execute social media strategy to optimize our public presence.
  • Manage content and maintenance of Literacy Source website.
  • Ensure communications materials are updated, accessible and maintain brand identity.
  • Work with program staff, including Co-ED, Educational Director, Volunteer Program Manager, AmeriCorps and VISTA volunteers, and Employment Case Manager, to coordinate and support community outreach for student and volunteer recruitment.
  • Serve as point person for media requests, including press releases, supporting Co-Eds and others as media spokespeople.
Event Management
  • Support, plan, and manage all fundraising events, including the Annual Breakfast, In collaboration with the Co-EDs and Fund Developmkent Committee.
  • Coordinate twice yearly Literacy Source community celebrations.
  • Oversee all event logistics and post-event evaluation and follow up.
  • Supervise, train, and coordinate event volunteers.
Other
  • Participate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives and strategic planning along with board and staff.
  • Represent Literacy Source at meetings, conferences and workshops as appropriate.
  • Assist with ongoing office activities, including phone answering, opening and closing schedule
  • Work easily as part of a team and participate in regular agency staff meetings
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in nonprofit fundraising, including experience with individual and major donor cultivation.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and e-mail communication skills that can articulate a compelling message.
  • Ability to effectively interact with co-workers, clients, and volunteers with diverse backgrounds and treat everyone with respect.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, problem solve, and work as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with website and social media platforms.
  • Experience with donor database, data entry & reporting; experience with Little Green Light a plus.
  • Physical ability to lift 25 pounds, sit, stand, bend, reach, and perform appropriate cleaning tasks.

COMPENSATION & HOURS

This is an exempt, salaried, full‑time (35 hour per week) position. Full benefits, including medical, dental, paid holidays, employer‑matching pension plan, vacation and sick time. Hours typically take place Monday to Thursday between 8:30 am and 8:30 pm, with flexible scheduling, at our Lake City learning center, with some evenings and weekend work. Remote work from home during COVID. Salary range: $55,000 – 60,000.
