As a non‑profit community learning center, we work towards an inclusive and equitable society providing education and opportunities for all adults. We provide free foundational skills classes and one‑on‑one tutoring at our Learning Center in Lake City and in locations throughoutSeattle.In 2024-25, we served 1,016 students in Seattle and surrounding areas, ranging from ages 18 to 91, speaking 75 languages from 64 countries. Of these, 99% were immigrants/refugees/asylees and 99% had low socio-economic status.

Position Description and Duties:

The Development & Communications Manager is responsible for coordinating and implementing Literacy Source’s annual fundraising and for coordinating communications to promote programs and fund development. The Development & Communications Manager partners with the Development Director, Development and Communications Associate, Communications Coordinator, other staff, Fund Development Committee, and Board members to steward our existing relationships and help us grow individual giving to support programs and organization development. The position includes appeal writing, event planning, donor research, relationship building, communications, and implementing the annual fundraising plan.

The Development & Communications Manager reports to the Development Director.

Fund Development:
  • Support the Development Director and the Fund Development Committee in crafting annual Development Plan.
  • Work with Development team to cultivate, maintain and grow individual donor engagement. Ensure robust and timely donor appreciation and stewardship.
  • Plan, create, and execute email campaigns and thank you letters for back‑to‑school appeal, GiveBIG, and Giving Tuesday email campaigns (3-4 email campaigns / year).
  • Plan, create, and execute end of year appeal mailing and coordinated email campaign.
  • Draft and send general communications related to fundraising as needed.
  • Maintain and update Development Plan, tracking KPIs and YTD progress to annual goals.
  • Support optimization of donor database (Little Green Light) – coordinate with Development Associate on database management donor information organization.
  • Support planned giving program by developing materials and documentation and responding to inquiries.
  • Provide logistical support to Fund Development Committee and assist board members in participating in fundraising activities, including donor solicitation.
  • Serve on grant team and help with grant application and report writing.
  • Maintain and update SOPs and Development Program notebook.
Communications:
  • Manage and maintain brand identity and ensure communications materials are updated, accessible, and consistent with organizational values.
  • Oversee Annual Report production and other donor communications.
  • Help develop written and visual content for external communications – including website, electronic newsletters, flyers, and social media.
  • Maintain and update Communications Plan, tracking KPIs and YTD progress to annual goals.
  • Coordinate external communications and maintain communications calendar.
  • Serve as project manager for website updates.
  • Create and manage procedures for photography storage and use guidelines.
  • Maintain social media strategy and policies.
  • Craft engaging social media posts that help raise awareness.
  • Design eye‑catching flyers and graphics for print and electronic communications.
  • Maintain a student story bank of video, audio, and written assets for fundraising and organizational story telling.
Event Management:
  • Support, plan, and manage the Annual Luncheon, in collaboration with the Development Director and Fund Development Committee.
  • Support, plan, and manage 2-3 donor stewardship events / year.
  • Coordinate 2-3 Literacy Source community celebrations / year.
  • Oversee all event logistics and post‑event evaluation and follow up.
  • Supervise, train, and coordinate event volunteers.
Other:
  • Participate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives along with board and staff.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives along with board and staff.
  • Represent Literacy Source at meetings, conferences and workshops as appropriate.
  • Assist with ongoing office activities, including in‑person staffing coverage.
  • Work easily as part of a team and participate in regular agency staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with website and social media platforms.
  • Experience with donor database, data entry & reporting.
  • Connection with mission of Literacy Source and the diverse communities we serve.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with Little Green Light a plus and willingness to learn new technology.
  • Lived experience that reflects our student population (proficiency in another language, especially Spanish, Chinese, Amharic, Oromo, Arabic, Tigrigna; immigrant or refugee; non‑traditional educational trajectory).
  • Familiarity with Canva or other graphic design tools and understanding of graphic design concepts.
Compensation and Hours:

This is a non‑exempt, salaried, full‑time 35 hour per week position. Full benefits, including fully paid medical and dental; 10 paid holidays; 2 floating holidays; paid office closure the first week of July and the last week of December; additional 24 days of paid time off; employer‑matching retirement plan. Some flexibility with work schedule, with some evenings and weekend work. The position is hybrid - required to be in the office at minimum two days a week at our Lake City location. Annual Salary: $57,876-$60,060 ($31.80-$33/ hour @ 35 hours / week).
