Job summary

Horizontal Talent is seeking a hands-on Backend Engineer in a hybrid Brooklyn Park, Minnesota role. You'll own from idea to production, building scalable backend systems using Java and Kotlin, with a focus on APIs, microservices, and PostgreSQL.

Responsibilities include translating business needs into technical solutions, designing scalable architectures, and ensuring reliable deployment and production support. A strong ownership mindset and experience with CI/CD are preferred.

Qualifications

• Ability to troubleshoot production issues and improve scalability and observability.
• Demonstrated ownership mindset and ability to work independently.

• Design, build, test, and support production-grade applications using Java and Kotlin

• Contribute to system design decisions with a strong understanding of modern backend architecture


• Develop and maintain APIs, microservices, and integration patterns with attention to scalability and reliability


• Work with PostgreSQL to design schemas, write SQL, tune queries, and troubleshoot database performance


• Participate in CI/CD pipeline creation and improvement, including build automation, testing, and release processes


• Monitor application health and help resolve production issues through root-cause analysis and performance optimization


• Identify technical risks, dependencies, and opportunities to improve maintainability and operational stability


• Support secure, resilient, and efficient application delivery across the software development lifecycle
