Job summary

Eagle County Government in Colorado seeks a Detention Commander for the Sheriff's Office to lead detention facility operations, supervise staff, and coordinate inmate transport with emphasis on safety and constitutional compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related area; and eight years of responsible law enforcement experience, including two years of supervisory/management experience in jail operations.
• Law enforcement experience, including patrol operations, criminal investigations, understanding of internal affairs investigations, and understanding of correctional best practices.
• Valid State driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle record.
• NIJO /AJA Certification preferred, although it can be obtained once hired.

Responsibilities

• Supervises the operation of the detention facility; interviews and recommends hiring of staff; plans, schedules, and assigns work to staff; establishes priorities; trains in best practices.
• Inspects subordinates' work to ensure compliance with laws and policies.
• Performs and supervises booking, housing, transport, commissary and visitations.
• Supervises food service operations.
• Reviews after-action reports and trains staff on jail operations and use of force.
• Develops policy drafts based on court decisions and attends jail management training.
• Audits inmate time computation to ensure court compliance.
• Manages annual jail budget with Sheriff Administration & Undersheriff.
• Negotiates with detention vendors and coordinates with County Attorney & Finance.
• Manages Inmate Trust Fund with Eagle County Finance.
