The Detention Deputy is responsible for the care and security of all prisoners and inmates lawfully in the custody of the Sheriff. Performs duties related to the daily operation of the detention facility. Duties include detentions or special assignments.
FUNCTIONS/TASKS: All people, with or without reasonable accommodation, who can perform the essential functions/tasks required in this job or position, will receive full consideration for it.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of or ability to learn: State and County statutes and ordinances; first aid and medical procedures and practices; County geography and surrounding areas including roads, streets, landmarks, buildings, and similar features; proper procedures and practices commonly related to a detention facility; proper law enforcement principles, procedures, and practices.
Skilled in: the use of law enforcement vehicles, firearms, related law enforcement equipment principles and practices of self-defense.
Ability to: communicate effectively in writing and verbally; establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with co-workers, other county departments, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and the public; work in close proximity of and effectively communicate with inmates.
Experience/Education:
High school diploma or equivalent, and some experience in work involving public contact.
Visual Acuity/Hearing/Speaking:
Ability to read and review documents, reports, and training materials and to observe activities while on duty; to discuss situations, make presentations to the public and testify in court; ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
Physical Effort/Dexterity:
Must be in a physical condition to be able to perform a high level of sustained physical activity; ability to control a suspect/prisoner; ability to operate a computer keyboard; ability to operate various office equipment; ability to safely operate a vehicle.
Environmental Factors:
Work is generally sedentary with occasional exposure to stress and life-threatening situations.
Work Schedule/Characteristics:
Assignments require working nights and/or rotating shifts.
Special Requirements:
Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License is required. Must meet all eligibility requirements to attend a POST-certified Basic Academy. Certified by the State of Colorado as a Peace Officer preferred but not required.
