Job summary

Brown County South Dakota is seeking a Detention Officer to ensure the safety and security of inmates, staff, and visitors in the county jail. The role may be designated “Senior Detention Officer” and includes rounds, transport, camera monitoring, and documentation.

The position involves supervising inmates, preparing logs, assisting with meals and medications, and maintaining order under county policies and procedures. Prior experience and a valid SD driver’s license are preferred.

Qualifications

• Knowledge and level of competency with inmate supervision and discipline.
• Knowledge of departmental and county policies; awareness of federal, state and local laws.
• Knowledge of building security principles.
• Skills in planning, organization, and decision making.
• Skills in maintaining records and preparing reports.
• Skills in monitoring inmate behavior and maintaining order in a detention center.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Makes rounds to maintain security and checks locks, fences and alarms.
• Transports inmates to and from court and appointments.
• Operates control room and monitors security cameras.
• Prepares logs and reports.
• Oversees inmate visitations and meals; supervises activities.
• Performs inmate search, intake and release paperwork.
