Job summary

Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota is seeking a Detainee Rights Project Lead to coordinate responses to ICE detention, building relationships with the Community Defense Team, partners, and detention facilities; oversee visits, trainings, and referrals.

The role involves regular travel across Minnesota detention centers, strong collaboration, and leadership of project staff; offering hybrid work with in-office collaboration and travel.

Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating large projects with multiple partners.
  • Experience with government entities, preferred.
  • Ability to travel to detention facilities to meet with partner agencies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint.
  • Ability to learn case management systems such as LegalServer.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead point of contact for detention centers and partners on this project.
  • Coordinate detention center visits and plan in-person detention center visit schedule for presentations and consultations.
  • Advocate for expanded legal services within the detention centers through relationship building with leadership and staff on site.
  • Travel to detention centers to present Know Your Rights and other topics.
  • Lead and coordinate MN Detention Project meetings and be ILCM point of contact for collaboration.

Introduction

TheDetaineeRightsProjectCoordinatorisresponsibleforcoordinatingresponsetoICEdetention. ThisincludesbuildingrelationshipsbetweenILCM’sCommunityDefenseteam,partners,and detentionfacilities,coordinatingdetentioncentervisits,improvingprocesses,andkeeping materialscurrent.Responsibilitiesincludeworkingwithdetentioncenterstoarrange presentations,consultations,andphoneaccess;workingwithpartnerorganizationstostaff detentioncentervisits;andsupporttheCommunityDefenseTeam.RegulartraveltoMNdetention centers is required for this role.

45%Facilitating Detainee LegalAccess

  • Serveasleadpoint-of-contactfordetentioncentersandpartnersonthis project.
  • Coordinate with detention centers that house ICE inmates, including Kandiyohi County, FreebornCounty,SherburneCounty,CrowWingCounty,and Appleton, MNtoplanoutin-person detention center visit schedule for presentations and consultations.
  • Advocateforexpandedlegalserviceswithinthedetentioncentersthroughrelationship building with leadership and staff on site and partnering with colleagues on strategy.
  • Befamiliar withICE’sNationalDetention Standards to ensurevisitsareincompliancewith 2025 detention standards, maintain knowledge of how those standards are implemented, and stay up to date on any changes to the detention standards.
  • TraveltodetentioncenterstopresentonKnowYourRightsandothertopics.
  • Appropriatefollow-upasneeded,includingdirectingreferralstocorrectstafforexternal agencies.
  • Coordinate logistics of detention center visits, this could include ensuring lodging is securedforthedetentionvisitandensuringthatstaffandvolunteershavenecessary credentials to enter the detention center.
  • LeadandcoordinateMNDetentionProjectmeetingsandbeILCMpointpersonfor collaboration.
  • Supervisesupportstaffontheprojectincluding participatinginthehiringprocess, assigning tasks, delegating, and regular check-ins.
  • LeadonacomprehensivedetentionvisitguideincollaborationwithotherILCMstaff.
  • Introducenewstaff,volunteers,andpartnerstotheprojectthroughsharingmaterialsand training.
  • CollaboratewithotherILCMstafftoimproveprocessestoensureaccesstolegalservices throughdetentioncenters,detentionline,andintake.
  • Work with staff and partnersto createdetentionpreparednesspresentations.
  • Supporttracking ofdetaineecasesinLegalServer,asneeded.
  • Coordinatedatatrackinganddatasharingwithpartnerorganizations.
