Job summary

Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota seeks an Assistant Supervising Attorney to provide delegated legal oversight, mentorship, and case review while maintaining an active caseload. The role supports the Supervising Attorney to ensure high-quality, compliant services for immigrants and refugees in Minnesota and North Dakota.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with immigration law, USCIS filings, and immigration court matters.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to travel to meet with clients and partner agencies.
  • Experience with cross‑department collaboration and workload management.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain own caseload including defensive and affirmative immigration matters.
  • Supervise and co-counsel supervisees and ensure ethical compliance.
  • Provide program support and outreach through collaborations with partner agencies.
  • Participate in meetings, grant reporting, and special projects as assigned.

Introduction

The Assistant Supervising Attorney will provide delegated legal oversight, mentorship, and case review while maintaining an active caseload, supporting the Supervising Attorney in ensuring high-quality, compliant legal services.

    • Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST): In compliance with Minnesota law, ILCM will provide employeeswithpaidsick&safeleaveunderthispolicy.Allemployeeswillreceiveeighty
    • (80) hours sick and safe time, or pro-rated upon the commencement of employment. Unusedsickandsafetimewillnotbecarriedoverfromonecalendaryeartothenext,nor will it be paid out at the end of each year.
    • HolidayLeave:MostmajorfederalholidaysoffincludingthedaysbetweenChristmasEve and New Years Day. In addition, ILCM offers one floating holiday and the opportunity to exchange holidays that don’t fall within an employee's religious or cultural background (i.e., alternative holidays).

  • Community Defense team: Provide representation to individuals in defensive immigration mattersinbothdetainedandnon-detainedcasesbeforeEOIR,BIA,andtheMinnesotaFederal District Court.
  • Affirmativeteams: Providerepresentationto individuals inaffirmative immigration matterswith USCIS.Providesupporttoimmigrantandrefugeeclientswhointeractwiththeimmigrationcourt system.
35%SupervisionandCo-Counseling
  • Workwithsupervisingattorneystoensureadherencetoethicalobligations,confidentiality requirements, grant requirements, and supervision standards.
  • Inimmigrationmatters,ensurecompliancewithDOJ/EOIRandUSCISrulesandprocedures.
  • Assistwithworkloadmanagement,anddeadlinemonitoring.
  • Co-counselcaseswithsupervisees
10%ProgramSupportand Outreach
  • Collaboratewithpartneragenciesonoutreachefforts,conduct presentationsandhostclinicson topics including changes to immigration policy, Know Your Rights, Immigration 101, etc.
  • Collaboratewithotheragenciesthatworkwithimmigrantandrefugeecommunitiestoensure resources are being best utilized.

  • Participateinlegalteammeetings,casereviews,andmonthlyall-staffmeetings.
  • Assistwithproposaldevelopmentandgrantreportingasneeded.

  • Minimumof3years’experiencewithimmigrationlaw,USCISfilings,andimmigrationcourt matters, including law school clinic, paralegal, and attorney experience.
  • Supervisoryexperience,includingsupervisionofinterns,lawclerks,etc.,preferred.
  • Abilitytotraveltomeetwithclients,partneragencies,andtoconductoutreachactivities.
  • ExperiencewithLegalServerand/orothercasemanagementprogramspreferred.
